I have been thinking of different ways to mount a top case without needing to buy a specific bracket, like a GIVI for example.

I already have a stealth backrest which has a bracket bolted under the luggage rack. http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=2680

My thought was to remove the backrest itself and use a similar mounting technique to secure a watertight case such as a pelican

Has anyone done something similar or possibly have some simple alternatives?

Take a look here...just got the large, comes with a sturdy metal mounting plate and serves as a passenger backrest. Painted the orange bumper flat black to match the rockster. Simple to install and for the price..can't beat it!! They are on sale and shipping is free over $50. Got the large case and a fleece neck warmer(to go over the $50) for a total of $63.

ChiTown uses a pelican case mounted to the luggage rack, and another for a tank case on his 1200R.

I have a GIVI 35litre mounted onto a plastic plate I made up that mounts in the exact same place as the silver BMW tail rack - ie you need the pannier rails, and the tail-rack assembly, but then you can remove the silver part of the tail rack assembly and replace it with a thick piece of plastic and bolt to top box straight to it.

Someone else on the board did this too and I copied them.

It's stable as anything and I've carried a long weekend's gear in it totally safely.

Reinvent the wheel...I can understand the engineering challenge of it, but, man, my time is a whole lot more valuable than running back and forth to the hardware store and trying to fabricate something that is going to hold valuable stuff on the back of my bike, going fast through twisties.

I got the hepco barker case with their bracket and it works real fine. It was 300+, iirc, but that's the point--nearly 6 months later and I don't remember how much it cost, it just works.

So, if it is an intellectual challenge and you'd rather spend time doing that to maybe save a few bucks, fine, but I'd rather be riding with a tested product.

I do not like to reinvent anything, I just hate the luggage off the rear of the bike, I want it right behind me, and I only ride solo.
I just bought the andy seatbagz as my brother in law ruined my sealine on a boy scout trip. I'll keep every one posted on performance and durability.

I just bought a JC Whitney topcase, and snagged a Hepco Becker mount off of Ebay. I will post pics when the job is done. However, I procrastinate alot so I can't promise anything timely.

I've been stewing on this issue myself. You probably sniped that H&B mount from me!

My bike had GS rails on it when I bought it. So my wife immediately demanded some sort of handhold. I bought a pair of R rails, sans the luggage rack plate. So now we have handles and saddle bags.

What I really wish is Ventura made a kit for the R1150R. Unfortunately the only mounting they offer doesn't work with system cases. We had one of their rigs on our Triumph Sprint and loved it.

But I think it would be easy to fab suitable adapter plates that would attach to the grab rails. Maybe.
