BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

Hi, I have only just stumbled across this website/forum having owned my 1150R from new since 2003! I like what I see and thought I would introduce myself. I live in central England and have been riding for over 30 years and have quite a mixture of bikes, see below.
I have one question to ask: I am thinking of getting a hugger (as they are called in UK) and wondered if anyone has any recommendations / pictures etc. for an 1150R?

Good to have you. Wished you'd found us sooner! I've been around here since 03 also when I bought my first BMW. Better late than never!

Is a hugger anything like a bugger? If so, I'd definitely recommend against it.

I was looking at getting one also but gave up on the idea after hearing about so many failing and breaking off.

I'm not sure if it's only one particular brand that has been a problem but they all mount off only one side due to out single sided swing arm.

Because they only mount off one side they tend to vibrate and wobble a bit..and I think it's this that causes them to break.

I think it was this one..see how thin the mounting arm is.

Also they tend to be very expencive...So I gave up on the idea...Good luck with it..and let us know how you go.

Used to work for a UK guy that would call the crew "a bunch of wankers" Is that anything like wackers or huggers ?

You will find this site the most enlightening and friendly of motorcycle sites. The folk here are the most knowlegable and free sharing people you would hope to meet anywhere and as an additional bonus they love motorcycles particularly the R1150R.

Welcome aboard, I'm with DJ and the breaking issue. I would look for one with a three point attachment, not just on the arm.

Unfortunately huggers and BMW's don't run together stateside, it is more evident with "crotch rockets"

Besides it can't be seen if you run bags, nevertheless, good luck on your search and post some pics of your ride.....

Hey thanks for all the replies - there must be more RRs out there than I had appreciated (I thought everybody bought a GS or Adventure)!

About the hugger, good point about adequate fixings onto a single sided s/arm - will have to my homework first.
I also take the point about huggers being mainly for crotch rockets, but I do like the look of them and it saves a lot of crap hitting the bottom end of the rear shock (lots of dirty wet roads in the UK).

Out of interest has anybody done a poll to see who lives where - i.e. what percentage of forum members are from USA, UK, Germany, etc.....
I would if I knew how.

Stu, Great big welcome to the forum from Lincoln (UK). You will find a few Brits with R1150Rs posting to this forum.
Also thought about a hugger but had the same concerns as others re the mounts. However, I have not found the crud to be too much of a problem - I keep a bucket of water and brush handy in the garage and give a quick brush down after a dirty ride.

Give a shout when over this way on a ride.
