One more year, and I will look good naked.

My wife bought me the gift of fitness for my 37th birthday. I now have a one year membership to a very nice health club, 5 minutes from my home. I added a trainer to my package, and now I arrive at 5AM every morning, Monday through Friday, to have this guy put me through hell. I'm quite sore, after only my 3rd workout in 18 years, but I feel good about what I'm doing. I've paid a certain amount of money that is non-refundable for this trainer, which is just more incentive for me to stick with the plan. I'd like to drop atleast 30 lbs, getting me back down to 195 (I'm 6'), and get ripped. A year of daily training should do the trick.
One more year, and I'll again look good with my clothes off. I'll post pictures.

I am sure most of us would be willing to take your word for it!
Many start fitness programs, few stay with them. I congratulate you on starting and encourage you to keep it up! I have gone to the Y at lunch virtually every day for about 8 years now, in addition to a morning turn on the exercise bike for over 20 years. My advice is to make it a habit. Good habits like bad habits are hard to break. And stay motivated. My motivation right now is mainly the fear of what happens if I quit!
Good luck!

I often get the urge to exercise, but I usually lay down and let it pass.

You know what they say:
"No pain, no pain!"

I pulled a towel out of my gym bag today. A tampon came flying out, and landed in the man's gym bag 5 feet from mine. The owner did not notice right away, as he was facing the opposite direction, while putting on his clothes. He did notice a minute later, but I was ignoring the whole situation by then, making as if I had no knowledge of this sanitary napkin that just appeared out of nowhere.
I should have been more thorough when cleaning out the hand-me-down gym bag from my wife.

A likely story Girlie man.

At least the guy found it before his wife did! Imagine trying to explain how one of those got into your gym bag!
Mine stinks enough, my wife stays clear!

Same here. I have intentions of someday starting a 'fitness plan'.

3 months. I've lost 5 lbs, and I've gone from 25% to 19% body fat. What I've really noticed, is how much stronger I am, and how much more stamina I have. This workout thing is addictive. Much less back pain too.

Well done, Gary. Very impressive, because you've put on heavy muscle tissue AND lost weight.
Have you lost the weight soley through exercise or have you been on a diet as well?
The ad at the bottom of the page promising 20lbs weight loss in 10 days didn't interest you then
Keep it up. Your message has tipped me over the edge and I have now started (for the third time this year) on a serious exercise regime. I was extremely fit until five years ago when I had quite a serious accident on my beuatiful Moto Guzzi (the driver of the Range Rover which I hit did not see me and he was subsequently prosecuted) Anyway, I suffered comminuted fractures to my elbow and wrist which have now pretty well stabilised, BUT over the last five years, I have put on weight and generally become a bit of a blob.
So; thanks Gary. I'm now going to kick my ass (so to speak) and get fit!
Ride safely,
Rog

Mostly exercise, but I suppose I have cut my calorie intake by about 1/3. I don't monitor the diet that closely, I just try to eat a bit less, and cut out most junk food and fast food.
Serious exercise regime has been started, eh? That's great. If you are consistent, for 30 to 45 days, you'll find it hard to stop. My first week was horribly painful, and I did not really enjoy the workouts until better than a month in. I used to look forward to the weekends for a break, now I look forward to Monday's routine again, and I have purchased another recumbent bicycle for my outdoor recreation/exercise. I'm definitely heading in the right direction.
I'm glad I hired a trainer, I needed the motivation. If you do this by yourself, you deserve more credit than me. Let me know if I can give you any advice, or share more of my experience. I'll most certainly give a report every three months, as it seems I've already spurred one person here to get fit. That makes me feel good. Stay focused, and be consistent, Roger.

consistency is the key to long term results. The most important workouts are the ones you really don't want to do, just make yourself go and you will be glad you did. Keep up the good work.

Better wait. You might go blind if you look now.

mechanic savant - when I worked construction, I still played basketball 4 nights a week for conditioning and fun. Once I moved into the office and quit b-ball, the money got better but I got out of shape quickly. I prefer the gym at the Y to going back to construction work!

Gary-
Wish I'd seen your original post when it had that new car smell. Guess that means you've got about 3 months head start, along with 8 years' worth of youthful vigor on me. Still, I'll ante up here for Roadster Board Fitness... peer pressure helps.
If Doug permits, then we might have some type of long-term post to capture everyone's (anyone's?) successful transformation.
Yours Truly will shoot for serious power-to-weight ratio improvement. Give me at least a year. Put me in a spinning class and you'll see how I earned my nickname.

Challenge
My trainer is mid fifties... ripped. You'll get no handicap for age.
I'll be spinning myself, as of June 7th, when my new Catrike Expedition arrives.
Feb 19th, 2009. I'll post pics. (before and after) Before will be in a thong, for extra effect.
