I have been thinking of going with an after market exhaust system. Object is to try to loose some weight off the bike, and maybe get some better sound. Looking for some imput on which exhaust system to go with. I have been looking at Staintune, Remus and Two Brothers any advice would be welcome.......Jerry

I just installed a Remus system on my bike this evening. I haven't had a chance to ride it yet but it's considerably lighter than stock and sounds much throatier. If you are looking for the most weight savings, check out the Ztechnik system, and is 20 some pounds lighter than the stock system! I was just about ready to pull the trigger on a Ztech system before I found the remus system for sale on the forum.

I love my Laser full system. They are pricey, but I like the looks and sound. It came with a chip that was easy to install and I have retained my centre stand and bags.
Whatever you choose show us some pictures.

I like my Staintune exhaust and collector. great fit and finish... it looks like a stock setup.

I was interested in the Zach exhaust too... looked nice, but it needed to be repacked now and again. from what i know, the staintune doesnt need to be repacked because it has a 'mechanical baffle' or something like that.

Just after I got my "R", I noticed a used Akrapovic system for sale locally at a really low price. I considered it for a bit but passed on it since the seller indicated that the performance change was mostly in moving the torque band up the Rev scale and the change in tone was a louder but still "flat sounding" blat. I thanked him for his honesty and kept the sewing machine clatter of the original.

I would like to hear DJ's though.

Hi again, Question if I just wanted to replace the cat ( to reduce weight, cost and improve sound)and keep the stock exhaust could I use the staintune collector? So later I could upgrade the silencer if I wanted. Any recommendations would be welcome.

A search for exhaust info here within the board will certainly support a few common themes:

(1) There's very little bang-for-the-buck WRT aftermarket exhaust and performance gains;

(2) OE exhaust components are heavy but well-constructed;

(3) "Exhaust note" preferences for R1150R riders are varied.

I recently traded my OE exhaust for a titanium Ztechnik. The difference in total system weight was at least the 20lb. advertised. The new exhaust "noise" is louder, more motorcycle-ish and less household appliance-ish, and potentially a nuisance during long rides. Time will tell.

Mrs. Sweatmark loves her DJ exhaust mod (OE can replaced by aftermarket tip). The muffler-ectomy releases some Boxer motor growl and a few exhaust pops, and costs almost nothing.

Replacing catalytic converter with Y-pipe and using OE muffler sounds a lot like the DJ mod to me, in terms of dB output and exhaust tone.

Two Bros. systems have a bark, as does the Staintune - but I liked the latter better during direct comparison when we stumbled upon two R1150R riders with the respective exhausts installed. My wife preferred the Two Brothers pipe.

I hear a Remus full system on an R1150R that sounded great!

Audition a few exhaust options if possible before you buy.

I have removed the muffler from my bike a couple of times, and have always ended up putting it back. While I love the sound and the look of the bike without the muffler, the things I don't like are that the exhaust gets all over the rear wheel and gets it dirty, and the bike vibrates more when in the higher RPM range.

I've not noticed the vibration and have noticed the tiny black spots on the wheel..

I think it's from condensation in the cat getting blown out..and that's why I have an angled tip on mine.

It now stays spotless..

Staintune is fine - have had one for 4 years on my 1100R.
Collector replaces cat.
System sounds great but you will need a fuel injection modifier such as:

Without this you will have all kinds of back firing problems.
Once set up properly you will experience a significant performance improvement.
Also, forget about mpg stats since you will only get about 35mpg.
Bottom line is that you will need to choose between performance/sound and fuel efficiency.

This is about the only 'other than stock exhaust' I really like!
You happen to have more info about this? I love the looks!

I have a few observations that may add a little to this thread. I have ran all of the following configurations of exhaust on the Rockster:

Stock full system
Stock cat and DJ mod
Two Brothers Y-pipe and muffler
Two Brothers Y-pipe and no muffler (only started the bike for a few seconds like this)
Two Brothers Y-pipe and stock muffler (again, only started up for a few seconds)

My findings are as follows:

Stock system- quiet and heavy. I guess we all know that. Looks nice though.

DJ mod- probably my favorite set up. Lets out a little sound and looks great. I don't know if there is a loss of bottom or a gain in top end, but the power seems a little more focused on 5k rpm and up.

Two Brothers System- LOUD. Sounds a lot like a Honda Civic with the infamous "fart muffler". Adds a little power everywhere, but like the DJ mod is focused more above 5k rpm's. I do notice the Rockster will raise the front wheel a little easier. Not that I am a wheelie prone rider or anything. I like the performance increase although it is small. I am also running a K&N filter, but I think I am going back to a stock filter at 30k miles.

TB Y-pipe and no muffler- VERY LOUD. I just had to start it up for a second to see.

TB Y-pipe and stock muffler- strangley, this sounded no different than the full stock system. The sewing machine had returned. I have thought about running the bike this way, but you would have to do a little creative engineering to make it work. The Y-pipe is too long and the muffler sticks out the back of the bike pretty far. I always thought that the converter did most of the sound deadening on the stock system, but it is actually the muffler.

My favorite so far is the DJ mod with stock converter. It's cheap, adds a little more sound and looks very cool. Really shows off the single sided swingarm. I worry about water getting into the converter though. I am currently running the TB system that I got from Tripton here on the board. I repacked the muffler and it is still louder than I wish it was. I am going to continue to give it a try for a while and see if it grows on me.

I hav eplayed around with the exhaust a few times. Now I have the Staintune low pipe with insert and a Remus Y pipe with the O2 sensor. So far this is great,no backfiring, sounds like a motorcycle, think old triumph, and saved a lot of weight. I don't think I gained any power but sounds better and is lighter. Looks great, better than stock.

I chose Staintune also because it looks like a stock setup compared to other aftermarket mufflers IMO. I can upload more pics if you wish...

the staintune has a cool sound to it. louder than stock but not obnoxious. I have mine fitted with a Rhinewest performance chip as well which helps a bit. I believe there are some soundclips somewhere on this site for a staintune exhaust.

I picked up a complete setup for not much a couple of years ago and probably have a couple thousand miles now.
No plans to go back to stock or switch.

Throttle response seems better throughout the curve.

People hear me coming, which I like driving in the city.
Never got that kind of respect or attention with the stock setup...


I don't doubt that some of the other brands have a more pleasant output, and nicer appearance, but they cost serious money.
II figure a y pipe is not rocket science, while a muffler may just be...
