Quick Disconnects

Post by Airman »

My Omega disconnects should be here from BeenerBoneyard Monday. What is the best way to remove the old clamps, just nip off the swages with a pair of dikes ?

If you can. However, they're pretty tough. Sometimes you can stick a small flat-blade screw driver in them and loosen them. You have to be careful because the pipe from the fuel pressure regulator/distributor is plastic. I used a Dremel with a narrow grinding or cutting wheel and cut mine off. No, there were no sparks.

Al, do the fuel filter lines ahve these things on them too ? I've got the tank off for that and decided to do the disconnects. Beemerboneyard only includes 4 clamps with the kit. I should have asked for more when I ordered. These are the 5/16" screw type FI clamps ?

Hey Bob,

I just replaced my QDs and used a pair of "mini-bolt cutters" that I got for $8 from Harbor Freight. I used them on the QD clamps and the fuel line clamps at the tank. One snip and they were off. I replaced the old clamps with 5/16" FI clamps that I got from NAPA.

No dike I know is going to take a nip off of any swage...but I digress.... ;)

Just did mine yesterday, along w/ a new PC680 battery. I had to dremel them off, esp on the plastic fuel lines. You'll need 2 1/2 feet of 5/16" FI hose and 8 #14 FI clamps from NAPA to do it right.

BTW, while you have the tank off, check underneath it. On mine, the big fat wire harness on the left side near the ignition switch had been chafing the tank...went right down to bare metal, and was starting to rust around the edges.
I had to sand, prime and repaint.....

Hey, Bob. I think your question has been answered. BMW uses Oetiker hose clamps on all the 5/16 ID hose including the two that hold the filter. Cut them off and replace them with 5/16 inch FI or fuel injection rated clamps. These are NOT the worm-screw type clamps you use on low pressure systems.

As previously posted, it's often easier to cut off the old hose and replace it with new. Especially for the pieces that attach to the plastic hoses. Beware, FI rated hose is expensive. Prepare yourself.

I was able to remove the clamps by simply tickling the swage with my small screwdriver. I slid them down and then worked the hoses off. Didn't have to cut the hose at least, but I think I'll replace the them unless NAPA scares me too much. I'm not too impressed with the stock clamps. I think if the hoses didn't fit so tight on the lines some of us would have caught fire long ago.

I used the dremmel tool as well and there were sparks. Had me worried a little bit but worked like a charm.

It is possible to use dike pliers to cut off the OE clamp at swage, or alternatively use a small set of nip pliers. I used the dikes, along with a big channel lock: grip the swage with dike/nips, then grip the plier's handle with channel lock for mechanical advantage. A firm squeeze on the channel lock results in mega-force on the pliers... and pops the swage right off.

I called CarQuest this afternoon. The hose is expensive, given what it is. $7 a foot. The clamps are sold in 4 packs for $3.69, not too bad since I don't need a lot of them. If I had time to do so, I could probably find hose for half that, but I will likely just buy the local product and get my bike back up and running. The Omega disconnects are pretty impressive, by the way. Well made. I think they might be a little less from Omega, but BeemerBoneYard was easy.

Remember to keep your old plastic quick disconnects which are plug-compatible with the Omegas. Attach one to a length of CHEAP 5/16 hose and then use it to drain your tank quickly and easily when needed. You attach to the return line for draining the tank. Very handy.

Here's a dumb question...

Which side of the return line do you connect to? My impression was that the return line was too high up on the side of the tank to drain it from the tank-side of the line. Or, do you connect to the bike-side of the return line and run the fuel pump?

You connect to the tank side of the hoses. You may have to try both hoses until you find the return line. The return line ends in an open tube at the fuel pump base plate, and the gas just runs out by gravity when you connect to it. It's about as low in the tank as practical. I've never had much luck siphoning all the gas out. You don't start the engine. I learned this trick from Ron at Motorcycle Repair & Rendezvous, an independent BMW shop in Salt Lake City.
