Can metal epoxy be chromed?

Post by bikermeow »

Not strictly a R1150R question (except that I have one) ...

Any views whether the ABRO epoxy steel can be chromed?

http://www.abro.com/abro_product_view.p ... =268&grp=0

I am using it on a bike part that was chromed; to fill in dents and pits and then hope to chrome it after sending it down. Would appreciate views.

Cheers

Metal epoxy is a misnomer, as the epoxy and hardener contain no metal. The inference is that it hardens like steel.

In answer to your question I don't believe there is an available method to do what you want. Chrome is primarily done on metallic surfaces and requires etching of the metal.

However, I did a quick search and came up with this patent

There is a vacuum plating process used in the automotive industry (and scale model industry, as well) that can put a metallic (aluminum that can be polished) plating on plastics. I'm not sure this will work in your case, but something to investigate:
