I know its been discussed in this forum, the stuff you can put in a tire in case of puncture. I am installing new tires, BT021, on my Rock, and was curious wheather this stuff really works, and what stuff works well. I recently fixed my 3rd puncture in 4 years, after riding for app. 28 years with no flats. Looking for opinions, is there something in these modern bikes and tires that makes them more pucture prone? Maybe its just me.

There's 2 (that I know of).

UltraSeal & SLIME.

Both pretty much the same thing, small rubber fragments held in suspension in a "goo". The small rubber fragments act in the same way a blood cells do near a cut in the skin - they pack the hole out until it's sealed (assuming the hole isn't massive, natch!).

I've used SLIME for some time and as long as you put the correct amount in the tyres (over-fill them and you run into wheel balancing issues) it works fine. :)

I have used a tire plugging kit that I got at an auto parts store.

I think BMW uses magnets in the alloy in the rim. I have had 3 repairs in two years. :?

Two schools of thought...and, IMHO, get a new tire and don't worry!!

FIX
or
REPLACE

Being entirely anal and only having two tires in contact with the road, I'm of the REPLACE school!
In fact, I just did on an ME880 rear with 2k on it....freakin' great screw went right thru the meaty part of the tread . This tire was put on replacing another ME880 with 4K on it that got a roofing nail through it, right on the edge of the tire.

I replaced the ME880 with a Conti RoadAttack....and I don't worry about anything other than getting another bloody screw in the tread!

Slime and all that other crap is just a VERY temporary fix. I always carry a tire repair kit on the bike (in fact, I have two..the original BMW kit and a "Stop & Go" kit).

I've actually had better experiences with SLIME than I have with the plugging kits. :) (and yes I've had my fair share of punctures)
