My low fuel light comes on usually around 160 to 190 miles after fill-up. It has come on as early as 130 miles if I've been running it pretty hard. I've heard of guys running as much as 220 miles before re-fueling. I wouldn't take that chance personally. R's don't push that easily.

While traveling to and from this year's Bash with DSKYSD, I discovered what I suspected for some time - my light comes on with plenty of gas in the tank! I would be in panic looking for gas and Brian's light would not even be on yet! And we would put the same amount in the tank!

Of course, we pushed it a little bit (my fault!) and I very nearly found out how hard the R1150R was to push! In the rain! On the side of I-81!

My light comes on at about 4 gallons. It easily holds 5.

The wisdom or thought behind the need to keep fuel in the tank, I am told is that the fuel pump is designed to operate with fuel, as a coolant initself. Running low on gas and deprivation of fuel to the pump reduces its life, it seems.

bikermeow makes an excellent pont. Heat, or better yet excessive heat is the enemy of electrical ccomponents. That being said running the tank down to minimum will affect the durability of the pump.

In our case there have been few and far between fuel pump failures.

My low fuel light can come on constant as early as 120 miles or as late as 160 miles. It also will come on for a while when starting, especially when parked on the side stand, and then go off shortly after take-off. Which is a nice early warning indicator BTW.

But, I take it for what it is (an idiot light - that could be burnt out) and reset my trip odometer at every fill-up. And I fill up between 140-150 miles no matter what. Sometimes earlier if the situation warrants, i.e. next gas is a ways away or when riding with someone that has a smaller tank, we all fill up so we have fewer stops.

One night I dreamed my fuel pump failed. I was flicking switches and turning keys and mashing buttons trying to get it to"whirr" on. Finally something I did got it to come on and I was so relieved! When I woke up my bed was wet! :^o

Hiya,

Just sharing a bit of knowledge. The Borsch fuel pump on my K75 "died" after 19 years (RIP, poor hardworking pump) ... It stopped working and while a few hard knocks on it may revitalise it somewhat, it would definitely be on the way out. A BMW replacement was quoted by my dealer for about US$450 excluding replacement. A trawl through the internet found the exact Borsch part for US$160 or so.

I use the odometer / trip meter as a fuel gauge; definitely more reliable than the fuel light. It is strange; for I have never seemed to be able to use the full 20 litres or so that BMW claim the fuel tank has.

Cheers

Mine Comes on at 160M with 1gal. left everytime. The light could be ajusted to come on with more or less by binding the float arm. My 0.02 worth.

My light comes on pretty regularly between 180-186 miles if I am on the open road. Less if around town. I reset my trip odo at every fuel stop, and I do usually go by that, judging when to stop by how many miles the next town is, what the odo says, etc. If on the slab, I usually wait until the light goes on and then start looking for gas. My usual riding partner is also on an R1150R and his light comes on pretty much at the exact same time. 200 miles on a tank is pretty standard for us when on the road.

I usually go around 200 miles before fueling, and it will usually hold about 4.3-4.4 gallons after going that far. the fathest i have pushed it is 212 miles, and it held 4.5 gallons. it does vary a little here and there. tonight coming home from work, 208 miles and 4.5 gallons.
