Hey folks,

Have read all the previous discussions on Whitney, GIVI, and the Coocase trunks.

Looks like it boils down to Whitney=cheap but suspect and Coocase=$$ but high quality.

Any changes or recommendations re what people would go with after they have had their trunks for awhile?

I need 40+ liters of storage 'cause I want to carry the laptop.

I tried the JC Whitney several years ago and was not very happy with it. I now have a Givi and love it. The Givi has a very strong mounting system and unlocks and removes easily.

I have had my Coocase (S48.L) for ~2 months now. The laptop fits in it nicely (along with yet another briefcase). I like everything about the unit with the exception of the auto locking mechanism. The auto locking mechanism is very unreliable, and I find myself manually locking the case more often than not.

One opinion in favor of the JC Whitney. Yes it is cheap, but large, has never failed, and the lock is simple and easy to operate. I used the cutting board modification method for mounting which is super easy and much better than the universal mount included with the case. Just my experience.

I think you will get a wide variety of response, and all will be valid from the author's perspective. It all depends on you. Good luck.

I've been using the Whitney cheapo. I sometimes think about replacing it with something a little nicer, but I have been unable to break it and it doesn't leak.
My laptop rides in the right side case.

I've seen a brand called Shad at the local Chinese dealer. They actually look pretty decent. Here is a review I found.

is much nicer than the early square box variety they offered. You can also find similar trunks on eBay that are pretty nice for the price.

I have the medium JC Whitney case (17-1/2"W x 15"L x 11"H Medium Matte Black Travel Trunk ZX277021). Great value for the money. It's not a Givi but it has never leaked and works like a charm. I customized my rear rack (cutting board mod) to give the mounting plate a flat surface to attach to. I keep waiting for the Iron Cross sticker to blow off so I can put a BMW sticker in it's place

The auto locking mechanism is very unreliable, and I find myself manually locking the case more often than not.

I couldn't disagree more with the auto locking mechanism. I have a Coocase S48,with liner, brake lights and keyring remote locking. At first I thought the remote was a gimmick, but after using it, it's my preferred method of locking and unlocking the trunk. The remote is especially handy because you can pop the trunk while the keys are in the ignition (or seat lock). The Coocase is a good box overall. The only things I don't like are 1: After you unlock the case (using the remote) it automatically locks after 15 seconds, if the lid is open, the BEEP is loud and annoying. 2: The rack the Coocase uses is mostly a Givi, with a Coocase adapter. Compared to the Givi rack, the Coocase adapter is a little cheesy.

Well, went with the Shad SH-45 with a cutting board mount. Turned out pretty nice and looks good with the system cases. The Shad seems like a well built case--the locking mechanism works well==my wife has a GIVI-look alike on her Yamaha Majesty and the Shad mechanism is better. Anyway, holds my laptop and will fit the full size helmet. Good so far!

The Shad is a good choice IMO.

I went the same way and it has served me well. I added 2 BMW Roundels, one on the lid and the other rear face (they cost almost as much as the box!) but they look the part.

Here's what the Emgo box looks like mounted. It ain't real pretty, but it's functional, keeps things dry even in heavy rain and is really inexpensive. It seems to mount solidly on the stock luggage rack.




I've taken it on several long rides (4 hrs+) and it worked great. I didn't trust it with heavy objects, but for an extra helmet and bike cover, it worked well.

This is the Shad solution. Big box but a cheap option especially if you don't bother badging it.
