I am about to pull the trigger on this deal but this is my first BMW.
Not sure if it's a good deal or not.

Is it true that they need valves adjusted every 6k miles?

Depending on what's on it - good or bad deal.

Good deal if it has:
- ABS (take $1,000-1,500 of if no ABS, and figure the bike will be a very slow sell.. BMW owners like ABS)
- OBC (on-board-computer, subtract $125 if no OBC)
- Centerstand (Subtract $150 if no centerstand 'cause that's what it costs to buy one.)
- Heated Grips (Subtract $100 or more if no heated grips - we like our heated grips)
- Bags (Subtract $600 if no bags 'cause that's what they'll cost used if you can find them used..)
- Sport windshield (tiny one, subtract $150 if none - they go for that used.)
- BMW seat that you want (low, medium, high - if not, subtract $150 - that's what they go for used, but you can probably sell the one on it to someone, so it's almost a wash.)

Add ons:
- TPM (Tire pressure monitor - add on $200 if it has TPM, wish mine had it)
- ASC (Automatic Stability Control - add on $150 if it has ASC, wish mine had it)
- Chrome Exhaust (no subtract on this 'cause some of us prefer the plain stainless)
- Black w/White pinstripes (was a $250 option new - add $125 for black/white combo)
- BMW Topcase (add on $300 for a topcase, which requires the BMW rack, add on $200 for the rack.)
- BMW touring windshield mount (add on $150 for one - new they are around $225 or so)
- BMW touring windshield (debateable since very few people keep it - but used they sell for $100 or so.)
- Some other windshield - figure 1/2 of new cost
- Custom seat - only add on if it fits you. Then figure 1/2 of new cost.

There were some bikes which came through without ABS - they were very slow selling new, and will be slow selling used. The majority of BMW owners want ABS. Factor in tires - unless they're new. New tires will cost you between $350-500 (price depending on tire and who installs them.) I have never seen one in the US without the centerstand, but it was an "option" (manditory one I think..) Some of the non-ABS bikes were selling for $12,500 brand new (2007's in 2008.) Fully outfitted (the stuff on the top part of the list) the bikes left the showroom somewhere over $15,000.

If there are extras like a tank bag - add on 1/2 of new. Ditto on auxilary lighting, extra electrical stuff, most other farkles.

Find out what warranty is remaining, and if the original owner purchased a transferable extended warranty. Standard warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles. The 3 years starts the first date that the bike crosses the dealers curb on it's way out. Good service records, or reciepts for parts if DIY are valueable.

And yes - valves are checked every 6k - but it's a pleasant job you can easily do at home - it's not a big deal like on some Japanese bikes or Ducati. They usually need a slight touchup at 12k mile intervals, although some people report going longer distances without the clearance changing.

I'm not sure if tires need replaced. It has 7k miles but I don't know how long they usually last.

I'll know more about it this evenign when i go look at it.

If they're the original tires at 7k - the rear is probably due. Front has perhaps another 5k-7k in it or so..

Take photos.. (and I'm really surprised no centerstand - be the first one I've heard of without it..)

Maybe it does have the stand. Don't they usually take the kickstand off though?

No, the kickstand is left on. At least on mine. It comes in handy when I am getting off the bike for only a short time. I can make out a center stand in the second photo. I think you're good.

That bike looks so much like mine, right down to the airhawk pad, that I raced out to the garage to make sure she was still there. Good looking bike. I hope you can make a deal that makes you happy.

whats the deal with that pad? is it just a gel filled for comfort?

If it's the Airhawk, as I think it is, it is made up of ~ 1"x1" air filled cells. It costs $189 and a lot of people swear by them for the comfort factor. It raises you up ~ 1/2". I don't like mine but don't dare ride any distance without it, because the stock seat is so uncomfortable.

That bike looks just like my bike....
And it's the FASTEST colour too

You will need it as the seat sucks

I bought almost exactly the same bike recently. Mine is a 2008. It had 14k miles and no saddlebags for exactly $10k from the local BMW dealer. So your deal looks reasonable to me.

I see a few things..

The windshield isn't BMW - it's ZTechnic's V-Stream. That has gotten mixed reviews here from people who have had it. New cost is surprisingly reasonable - around $200 with the bracket.

The bike also has Motolites on it - the fork mounted lights. New you're looking at around $350 or so for them. Figure 1/2 of new value added.

Has the BMW head-guards. Around $125 new. Figure 1/2 that used.

It has some additional rear lighting on either side of the license plate - figure +$50 for them.

Bike looks nice - and it does have the centerstand (in 2nd pic.) I think $10.5k is a good deal for it.

Ok i test drove an R 1200 R today and I'm not gonna lie. That seat was pretty damn uncomfortable.
Also felt like I was leaning forward on the handlebars a little too much.
How much will risers cost me?

I guess I am used to my cruiser because I felt really high off the ground and the bike felt really light, nimble but light.

Told the guy I would call tomorrow with my decision. I have to think if i didn't like it or if it just felt different from my cruiser.
Bonus, it had cool highway bars that fold out from the cylinder heads. Pretty cool.

I found the higher body position a bit uncomfortable at first. I don't even think about anymore, I enjoy my view of the world. You do have a new advantage being eyeball to eyeball with SUV drivers and seeing their vehicle.

You can get bar risers on eBay, very simple design, installs in minutes and no other mods needed. good luck on the purchase. Just search "r1200r" on eBay, if you can't find them I'll get the name of the company I got mine from.

one more thing, did you get up to Highway + speeds on it? The reason I ask is that V-tech windscreen placed all the airflow on my helmet, after riding for an hour my neck was sore from all the head movements, also made my eyes tired from a constant vibrating view, that's why I went with the sport screen on mine, now I take the wind to the chest and my head stays still unless it's really windy out.
