a link to the quick disconnect thread?

Post by vegas_rider »

hi guys,

can somebody hook me up with a link where i can read about the whole deal with the quick disconnects and the zip ties being too tight? preferably one with a lot of pics so i can reference it on my bike as well? i've tried the search but it just continues to bring up random threads.

thanks.

I would like to bump this up if you don't mind, but I've been searching for any kind of advice on quick disconnects also. I'm going to get the chrome plated QD's from beemerboneyard soon, and was wondering if anyone had some instructions on how to install them.

Zip tie: http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?f ... ie#p155982

QD issue is legion, here is one link: http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?f ... disconnect

Beemerboneyard has a pretty good kit:

Search works pretty good here, just focus on the 1150 sub-board. Good luck.

Installed mine from Beemerboneyard today. Very simple, even with a full fuel tank. Here's how I did it - in about a half hour:
1) Press the metal disconnect tabs on each of the two stock plastic Quick Disconnects to separate them. You now have four plastic Quick Disconnect (pQD) components attached to the end of four fuel lines - two lines lead to the tank, two lead toward the motor. Note that one tank-side fuel line has a male pQD and the other one has a female pQD.
2) Loosen the four clamps that secure the four pQD to the four fuel lines. (I'd previously swapped my stock clamps for removable Fuel Injection type clamps. Stock, crimp style clamps need to be cut open (without damaging the rubber fuel line) with a wire cutter or similar tool.
3) At this point you want to do something to prevent fuel spilling from the two tank-side fuel lines after you remove those two tank-side pQD's. I used a small vice-grip pliers to clamp the fuel line and it worked great. After removing the pQD and swapping in the new metal Quick Disconnect (mQD) , I moved the vice-grip to the other tank-side line.
4) Use a small screwdriver to free the male fitting of the pQD (where it inserts into the rubber fuel line) from the fuel line. Be careful not to tear the rubber fuel line. Pull the pQD out of the fuel line.
5) Slip a new metal Fuel Injection type clamp (included) onto the fuel line and then insert one of the four mQD's.
6) Secure the Fuel Injection clamp, remove the vice grip and move on to the other of the two tank-side fuel lines.
7) The lower two pQD's are swapped in the same manner as the as the upper two but you don't need to clamp off the fuel line.
8) I put a small amount of rubber o-ring lubricant on the o-rings of the new mQD's prior to connecting them.
The new metal PQD's are a work of art! It's kind of a shame to cover them up with the R1150R's stock plastic shroud...

My QDs both broke off in my hands (2004, R1150R, 20k (s)miles on the clock) while trying to un-hook them. Had some 5/16" OD SS 304 welded tubing and several small screw type hose clamps and cut off a couple of sections of SS tubing to the length of the assembled QD and used that to replace the QDs. Looks neat, lasts a long time, guaranteed to never rip, shrink, rust or tear and the government will by lots of them :)) I live on a fixed income so couldn't really afford to by QDs if I didn't have to.
