Does anyone have any comments on this? Raising the handlebar and moving it back. Are there many types and anything that I should avoid?

There are many types and it depends on what are your specific needs, most of them do not affect any of the cabling or brake lines. See the link below for some different options............

I put the Verholens on mine. You sit up straighter, but you are in the wind more at freeway speed.
Very nicely made but expensive.

Did you have to change cables for the Verholens?

No, all the cables and hoses are long enough. I did rotate the bars up a little, so I had to reposition both lever assemblies.

Be careful on the ones that bring the bars "back" and not just up.
It will change your steering enough to make a difference as the bars will no longer be in a line up from the forks..

I had MotoTechniques risers on my 2004 1150R. They come in two sizes and I believe I had the 1 inch up and 1 1/4 inch back size. No trouble with cables, except you do have to re-route the throttle cable to outside of the the headlight bracket. No big deal. Also, I couldn't tell any difference in how the bike handled. Just more comfortable.

I went the same way as awagnon. The alteration was fine. No cable changes, but I cut a couple of zip ties and re-did them to make sure cables were loose enough. It's a small change, but well worth it for long rides. Relaxes the forearms a bit and makes the back straighter. Mine are off at the moment, but going back on soon.

Verholens for me, as well. No cable issues, & as said, just had to rotate the controls slightly.

The resulting riding position suits me, at 6'-2", but it is a personal thing.

I find that VARIO by MFW are the best.

I fitted the mototech risers a few days ago without any refitting of cables or hoses. I find the bike to handle even better than before and the position is more relaxed. Just perfect.

I've finally put some miles on with the SW Motech risers. They are 1" up, and 1" back - they just go out diagonally.
I think they detract from the naturally good handling of the bike for me. I remember trying an R1150R with a Gen-Mar ones, I believe, and I think they were 1" up and 1.5" back, but they felt great. I know this makes no sense to me. I am just a little disappointed. I thought the current ones I have would make ride more comfortable and not affect handling.
I feel like I am using the handlebars more than I should, rather than using my body to lean. Maybe I need more time out there with the new posture. It was easier being that much over the bike as it was before. Anyway, I just thought I'd add my opinion.

+1 on the Verholens, though they are expensive - they look the best, IMHO. I'm 6'1" and combined 'em with a footpeg lowering kit, for just about the perfect riding position.

Verholens going on on Friday! If the bike is more comfortable then the stress is reduced. And at my advanced years
I should be able to reap some benefit.

Those are the ones I used, fit very nicely, reasonably priced,
no cable problems. I did loosen some of the zip ties like many
folks have done just to avoid problems with the wires at a later
date.

I had first tried some from A&S that were "fancier" but they didn't
fit the bar diameter. They were more rounded and looked somewhat
like the Verholen's. At least A&S was nice enuf to provide a
refund no problem. I looked but don't see them on their now.
