Am I crazy: How to convert a r1100rl to an R1100S
I am looking for an R1100S but have yet been able to find one locally that is the right price/configuration. I do however, have access to a really low (4500 miles) mileage R1100RL that is at the right price. My question is, would it make sense to try and convert this to an S configuration? What would be required?
At 6ft 2 in and 220 lbs the stock R position of this 2001 edition is too upright for my liking. I used to ride a 2002 K1200RS and really prefer that riding position, which seems to be more in line with the R1100S.
Do you think this is a worthwhile endeavor, or should I just keep hunting for the perfect machine for me?

Keep searching or purchase elsewhere and have have it shipped. The two are not even close to each other.
I purchased an 'S' and had it shipped (sight unseen) and have been perfectly happy.

You're crazy.
Actually, the cleanest, most impressive R1100R projects I've seen is Oliver's Roadster documented somewhere here. He not only grafted key R1150R parts onto the bike and changed ergos with handlebar modification, but went the full distance with engine tuning.
I've ridden R1100S and both early and later K1200RS, and would imagine that at your height the lower bar position - coupled with flatter rider seat - of these bikes is key to comfort. The handlebar and peg position were biggest complaint on my R850R and R1100R bikes.
The Rockster ergos are a nice compromise.
Why not get another K bike? Or maybe RS? I was on the hunt for R1100S some years back... Frustrating to find so few out there.

Hi, I am the one sweatmark is talking about. I'd say forget about converting a RL to a S Model. The S has a totally different frame, front fork (and bridges), bodywork, wheels, engine, final drive and so on. It would cost you a fortune.
Even modifying the RL in terms of power, ergonomics, etc you must have gone nuts like me. For all the modifications I spent a good 5 to 6k US which is much more than the actual value of the bike. But no regrets! I can still drive my friends (riding their Ducatis) crazy because they can't get me off their rear wheel.
If you prefer the S just wait for the right one to pop up and go for it.

I had considered another K bike, but quite honestly, I want something more reliable, I had my K bike for 3 years and during that time had fork seals, fuel line break (spraying fuel, fortunately, not while I was riding, a known recall), shaft seals, and brake redos, all in all about $1000 in repairs per season. As I couldn't do many/any of these repairs, it became expensive. I liked the ride and the power, even though a bit of weighty pig. So the S seems a good alternative, easier to maintain, lighter, better handling etc. I certainly would consider a Rockster, but they seem to be harder to find than the S already!sweatmark wrote:You're crazy.

Oliver - Every time I see pics of your bike I think "wundershoen, wundersauber Motorrad!" I would really love to take on that kind of project... maybe that's my new trackbike when I sell the Buell?
<edit> While I'm thinking of it, do you ever experience any ground clearance problem with those under-engine exhaust headers? I'm hoping that there has been no problem, as I have an idea for my R1100R project (already enthusiastic)...

One advantage of the R1100S is a good online owners' community in Pelican Parts. At least from what I read during own S search.S seems a good alternative, easier to maintain, lighter, better handling etc. I certainly would consider a Rockster, but they seem to be harder to find than the S
Of course, we'd love to have you join our ranks here, if a Rockster deal just happens to shown up for you.

no problemo with the ground clearance but only because I have used the short paralever link of the GS which lifts the back of the bike by approx 2 cms. I also have a rear oehlins damper which is set to lift the back further. Without these measurements it would be a problem. But even with these if have to be slow on curbs ... Nevertheless it is a very fine exhaust system I have. Both in terms of sound (not too loud), power and torque.

Be patient and wait for the right one. Eternal love does not come overnight. However I suggest you testdrive the bike of your choice (or at least the same model) to see if this is the right one.
