Haynes repair manual

Okay, so I'm old-fashioned. But I want a printed manual, dangit!

More to the point, I *don't* want to have to worry about using the laptop (my machine but I use it for work) with greasy / oily fingers, or spending the cash to get a separate computer and monitor for the times I work on the bike. My home desktop is a Mac, and the manual is for Windows.... I also don't like just printing out the sections I'm working on and taking them to the garage ... that's just asking for having to go back and print more sections later on. :-)

So ... I know there are DVDs out there (I have one). It appears as though Haynes also publishes one - number 4598. Anyone have it? Any good?

Good roads,

Mate, iam with you on this, i also pefer the 'old fashion' type of repair manual.

I recently bought the Haynes manual & it seems a good source of info as it explains step by step on what to do & how to do it etc..

But i did find two errors (there maybe is more, i dont know) with the final drive service, the manual says its not needed after the the first break in service & to add 220ml instead of 180ml.

Its a good read & worth getting just to find out more about our bikes & what makes them tick (no pun intended).

I have all three manuals for my R1150R, the factory CD, the Clymer, and the Haynes. I'm a shop manual junkie. I even paid full MSRP for the CD back in 2002.  :(

I never look at the stupid CD and for whatever reason, I never look at the Clymer either. When it comes down to it, I usually just resort to the Haynes and the threads from this great forum and that's all I've ever needed.

Where can you get the Haynes repair manual?

You're looking for Haynes H4598. Amazon doesn't seem to have it. Here it is on Haynes's website: http://www.haynes.com/products/productID/574

The least expensive I found it was here:

http://www.repairmanual.com/online/hayn ... nual-h4598

Be careful, though ... apparently there's another Haynes H4598 out there, an earlier edition, that covers the R-bikes from 2004-2006 only (see, for instance, http://www.whitehorsegear.com/bmw-r1200 ... l-20042006) That one does NOT cover our bike explicitly.

I don't get it. The book shows 04 thru 09 but the description talks about 04 thru 06. Which is correct? I have an R1200R '08 sure would like to get the right book.

Seems coherent to me, although both the older and new Haynes manuals bear the same Haynes number:
the Haynes page shows and describes the 04-09 manual,
the repairmanual.com page shows and describes the Haynes 04-09 manual,
the Whitehorse Press page shows and describes the older haynes 04-06 manual.

BTW, the repairmanual.com site has a programming quirk (at best) or dishonesty (at worse): if you elect to pay by credit card, and it figures out you also have a PayPal account, it asks if you want to use PayPal. I didn't, but the onscreen buttons were confusing and whatever I hit - I think it was "continue" - put me in PayPal land. I didn't see that this had happened until the PayPal confirmation showed up later in my email inbox. I called and cancelled the transaction because I didn't like this. To its credit, repairmanual.com cancelled the transaction without hassle.

I could very easily be wrong, but I think this is legit.

My guess is that repairmanual.com uses PayPal as their payment processor. Once they determine how much your order is, you're handed off to PayPal to collect the credit card info etc. So, I think it's PayPal, not repairmanual.com, that recognizes you might have a PayPal account.

FWIW, this has happened to me on a number of sites, with no ill effects (so far).

I find it a little amusing / disturbing, because at one point I actually had a PayPal account, and then canceled it because there *was* a fraudulent transaction. Here's the thing that made me cancel it: PayPal caught the fraud, backed out the charges, and *didn't tell me it had happened*. When I called PayPal to ask about these odd charges appearing and being backed off on my account activity, it took me a while to get someone to actually admit that there had been fraudulent activity ... and the rep seemed amused that I found this troubling. (Shocking, I know, that I get upset when I'm not told about such things.) So, though the account's been canceled for, oh, a year now, PayPal still apparently has my e-mail address and asks me if I want to use my PayPal account.

Anyway, stuff and nonsense aside, I did in fact buy the (correct) manual through repairmanual.com, the P/N is correct, it does cover our bikes, and - from what I've seen looking through it - it seems to be pretty good. Hardbound, which was a pleasant surprise to me. Most photos black and white, but the wiring diagrams are in color.

Good roads,

Hi Lewellen,

That sounds very likely.

My objection was to the form of the page - it led me to execute via a PayPal transfer instead of a credit card payment. I'd guess that PayPal is motivated to encourage folks to use its service, and is not terribly concerned if the fork in the road is not clearly marked. I don't choose to support that business practice

FYI - repairmanual.com has the manual on backorder.

I recently ordered the 04-09 Haynes manual for $28 through themotorbookstore.com, cheapest I could find.

Haynes also said they're on backorder. I asked when they expect it, but haven't received an answer.

Once again, themotorbookstore.com has them. I just got mine, fast and cheap-ish. No affiliation, just a customer.

Heh. That's because you musta ordered last week. I ordered on Thursday, and they said they were out of stock (like everyone else), and expected to ship next week.

Just ordered one. No mention of out of stock yet!
Maybe it's one of those that emails you a "by the way we are out of stock" after you order...
:doubt:
