I've been reading ChiTown's story. Amazing adventures, can't believe the places he has taken his R. Makes me want to get out and do some traveling. Anyone have a set of luggage that is collecting dust, taking up garage/closet space, neglected and calling out for someone to love? If so and you would be willing to pass on to a worthy successor please PM me.

They are A$ 700 each here in australia and they key them while you wait to your key , with mine which were new it took 15 minutes to key them to my key, the bike was a year old when I got them.

Current price is a killer deal on those. That's only like the third set of used bags I've seen since I bought my R12R in '07. I bought the first set and just had them rekeyed to my bike this fall. My dealer did the work as part of a service bulletin and it was free of charge!!

Thanks for the eBay tip. The ad specifies, "Original equipment for a 2005 R1200ST" ... "Will fit 2003-2007 R1200R".

I have a 2009 R1200R. Did the system cases / mounts change after 2007? Anyone know if the 2005 cases will fit the 2009?

Depending on how much crap you want to bring with you, there's plenty of other options for packing that don't involve pricy BMW panniers.


Here's the R loaded up on 2 week camping trip, and this was before my camping gear got much smaller.
Nowadays I could easily pack for an extended camping trip with just that grey BMW 51L sports bag.




Besides the BMW bag, Ortlieb makes very nice saddle bags, and then there's the Giant Loop bags that guys on ADV really like.


Are you going to camp?

If not, just get a dry bag and a pair of ROK Straps and you're good to go.

The mounts are the same as far as I know for '05 on the RT/ST to the '10 R/RT, and the '07/'08/'09R. If you haven't checked my response to your bag querry in the buy/sell section you may want to drop in over there.

FWIW, Joe has a point, the hard bags are not really needed for weekend-5 or 6 day trips as long as you pack lightly in moderate temperatures. The set I bought sat on a shelf from winter '07 until this past fall when I took a 6 day run through Kentucky in 40 degree weather and needed room for extra cloths, and the capacity to bring back most of a case of bourbon from my distillery tour

Yebbut ... the panniers do make a trip easy since they are aerodynamic, dust + waterproof and lockable. Pack 'em and forget 'em. No need to cinch straps, check zips and covers or anything else while riding- you won't notice they are there at all. And you can park the bike and walk away with more peace of mind - great for little rambles or tours along the way. On day trips from overnight accomodation, you can leave helmet / gear in them without worry.

Am I biased? Oh, yes - I've had lockable BMW panniers on every bike for the past 26 years, and these are easily the best of them. I'd get the topcase as well . The one-key, secure, simple experience is so much easier than the alternatives ....

Corollary: They are only plastic, so if you are undertaking the Joe Finn adventure trail, soft luggage located where it won't get harmed in a wee drop, has its place. Since I only ride those tracks in my dreams (i.e. after reading Joe's latest adventure), the lockable panniers work just fine for me.

Thanks everyone. Especially nice to hear from you Chitown. Yes, camping is the plan. I have the camping equipment covered from hiking in the Sierras and on the AT, just need something to hold it. If I can find an inexpensive set of lockable BMW cases that would be preferable, but clearly not the only option. Thanks for the links to the soft options. I already have a 10 and 20 liter Kriega bag set for the rack. My initial trips will consist of exploring Northern CA on short trips (less than a week). A small soft pannier set may be just the ticket.

BTW, locking cases are nice, but once you're out of the city and out camping, the last thing you need or need to worry about is locking up your stuff...

I have to agree, every BMW I have had I eventually bought the cases as well. Yes they are expensive but that's BMW.
There is alternatives out there but nothing is as good as cases. For the price on ebay I would get them, there a steel!!!
I just went on a recent trip covering 800km and decided to just strap a bag onto the back seat because I wasn;t carrying much gear. Every time I wanted something from under the seat everything had to come off.
My next purchase is the top box!

Thanks for the eBay tip. Unfortunately, the eBay cases sold for more than my max bid. Still keeping my ears open for a good deal on system cases, but think I'll try out the Cortech Sport Saddlebags. Along with the Kriega US-30 Combo Tailbags (already have these) there should be enough room to hold enough gear for short camping trips.

PS - ChiTown, I sent you a PM (do not have your email address).

The R12R bags are great. Their one big shortfall is that they do not hold a size 14EEEE spare pair of shoes too effectively. A chronic problem I suffer from.
