I had all the symptoms of the HES failure and just ordered a new one.


"... If you experience the motor shutting down, then firing up again and, concurrently, your rpm's are dancing around, this is typical of a bad HES.
Sometimes it will restart when cooled down, run well and then go kerplooey again.
The wiring behind the HES is prone to heat failure and, occasionally, one of the sensors can also fail. In my case, it was a combo of the two. A new HES is around $200 and is also a DIY job which is well document and only requires a couple of tools which you can easily make yourself.

I printed out the Diagnosing and Replacing the Unit guide.

I did read somewhere about how to set the timing but any tricks and guidance for this "simple" DIY job is greatly appreciated... I am willing to try the job but is something I have not done before.

AWESOME!!! Exactly what I needed.

Hi I just replaced the Hall Sensor and while I was at it put in a new battery.

I have a couple of questions:

How do I tighten the alternator belt? I did see a reference to how to adjust the Poly V belt...but not sure exactly how that works.

Also, I had to remove the bottom bolt from the front shock to get to the top of the alternator...now I can't seem to get it back in place - any tricks?

Finally, how do I adjust the timing?

Newbie just starting to do his own work.
