Odometer

I have a brand new R1200R
I have only done 376km on the bike but I am finding something strange on the odometer
my odometer reading is 376
I picked up the bike with 4km on it and reset my trip meter.
my logic tells me that my trip meter should read (376-4)= 372 but my trip meter reads 382km.
Is this a factory/software problem?
what effect does this have on calculating on fuel consumption. which one do I believe.
what effect does this have on the on board computer that calculates the km left on tank?


Has any other person seen this?

OMG

This is basic so excuse me if you know this.

The bike has the mileage readings Odometer/Trip 1/Trip 2. Trip 1 and 2 are resettable, are you sure which one you reset and which one your looking at.

They (THE COMPANY) recommend reseting the MPG readout at fill up but don't mention the trip meter so I assume ( we all know what that gets you) that the computer uses the regular odometer mileage or what increments it to figure gas mileage.

BTW: We've discussed this ad nauseam on this list. Be aware that people that have blind trust in the miles to empty reading usually end up pushing a 400+ pound motorcycle down the road or leaving it on the side of the road and walking.

Here's a question for you metric guys. Do you still call it mileage when your counting in meters??

Do not, repeat DO NOT trust the "miles/kilometers to empty" feature on your computer. It is unreliable. I ran out with 22 miles showing "to go" just last month. You can find more than a couple of guys that learned this the hard way on this form.

This feature is so wildly optimistic that this weekend it was showing 283 "miles to go" when I already had 50 miles traveled since I filled the tank.

Any one ever do 333 miles on one tank of gas?

I see what you mean. I guess you would only notice that on a new bike. Now we'll all have to check our trip meters against our odometers. It will be very interesting to hear what your dealer has to say about this. Good luck.

Trip 2 is a cumulative representation ... I reset Trip 1 and leave the other one alone when I fill it up.

Resetting Trip 1 at each fill-up is an excellent traditional motorcyclist (read: geezer) technique to avoid relying only on the may-not-be-accurate "Miles to Empty" computer function. I do it every time.

A note on the tripmeters: they're limited to 999.9 miles, then begin counting again from zero. I wanted to run Trip 2 to record the total distance of my recent long trip, and was disappointed on day four when I checked Trip 2 and found the display showing "233" or something like that.

I was shocked when I found out that the trip odometers only went to 3 digits. I normally use one for my oil change intervals. They should have 4 digits.

Depends on both a) how hard I've been twisting the throttle, and b) the availability of fuel in the direction I'm riding. Lots of acceleration and higher speed yields lower mileage. If gas if regularly available every 10 or 20 miles, as it often is here in California, I can wait until the red low-fuel light goes on; if there's a seventy-mile stretch ahead with no gas, then fueling early makes sense.

That said, I usually go 200 or so before filling up. I fill to the bottom of the red filler neck plastic, and it usually takes between 4 and four and a half gallons. On a recent long trip though eastern MT and all of NE both east and west, off the interstates, I often filled it up at 150 out of some anxiety about finding gas. Once in MT, I passed a gas station when I shouldn't have, and got to the next one running on fumes: I don't remember the mileage on the odo, but the pump said 5.6 gallons.

I checked the trip odometer on my R1200R and found it to be spot on. I rode to work and arround town for 110 miles and they both read 110 miles.
