What method is used to remove the decals from the tank? Maybe a chemical. My owners manual shows the R1200R without the decals.

I just left the bike in the sun and let the tank warm up, then picked the decal off with my fingernail. Cleaned the glue that remained off with liquid cleaner and polished the tank with a cleaner wax.

I have a black R1200R and the decal is on top of the paint - not to sure about the other colors. I think some of them have a clear over the decal and if that's the case your going to have to live with the decal or go for a repaint.

Same as Harry ... a little sunshine, a (patient) fingernail, and clean up. You'd never know it had ever been there.
Haven't missed in in 4 years ... though I no longer get asked "how big it is, mate?" ...

This was a new 2007, black decal on top of the paint.

removed decal using a hair dryer. Once removed used a little rubbing alcohol and them polish and buff up by hand.

Mine is on top of the clear coat so I think maybe using a heat lamp might loosen the decal...it already has started peeling on the "one" on the brake (rear break ) side. My heat lamp is a 300 watt bulb used for drying paint. Heating and peeling might be the way to go.... the wheel would probably work better too.

M249joe... the reviews on that product mentions paint coming off with the decal...have you tried the wheel?

mikes... did using alcohol harm the finish????

Careful with the heat gun, the tank just has to be mildly warm. Enough to soften the glue not the decal or the paint. The rubbing alcohol won't hurt the paint, when your done finish up with a soft cloth (t-shirt) and then a cleaner wax.

It's really not a big deal, just time consuming. You can't rush it.

I like it without decals but I'm still trying to figure out a way to put on pin stripes that look 'right'.

I used a hairdryer on very low heat just enough to warm the area. Rubbing alcohol used but you could use goo remover or even kerosene. You don't need much just enough to take any sticky glue off. Polish and your done. You should also know that I'm in Sydney and don't know if there are any differences between US delivered bikes. My only concerns is if your bike has clear over the top of the decal. Mine didn't have any.

Not sure why you'd want to remove the R1200R decals on the tank but a hairdryer to soften them, pick 'em off and any sticky residue can be cleaned off with good old WD40 - works a treat. If you have any photos of the tank without the decals, I'd love to see them.

My owner's manual has a picture on the cover with the R1200R missing...thought the plain tank gave a more motion look to the bike....the decal draws ones attention away from the tank's lines....IMHO.
I don't have a digital camera but might be able to post some pictures using a friends camera.

The pads are from Tourtech. I have a habit of holding on to the tank with my legs when the riding gets spirited and the result is the tank gets really scuffed. Not bragging, it surely doesn't happen very often any more but the pads are just an old habit.

Harry...looks very clean. Perhaps one more picture at eye level with the tank. Got new tires today...no decals tomorrow.

12-02 ... have located a hair dryer to borrow (can't buy a dryer for a one time use) ... also the decals might even be picked off but very time consuming.

Just spent all of twenty minutes peeling my tank decals off....using a hair dryer on low and it was a piece of cake. Now I got to get some pictures...might even wash my bike...maybe. Thanks for the help.

best way to get rid of any sticker you are tired off... +1

funny, i just did this on saturday. my right side was already mostly off from a few years in the california sun (i have no garage).

a but of clay bar and it looks great. there is a slight ghosting since the black paint seems to have subtly faded under the clearcoat, but it's not bad.

will post pics later.
