I know this should probably be in the "helmets, safety, ..." section, but I'd like to post in a more active forum. I'm finally swapping out my 6-year-old clear visor on my brain bucket in favor of one that will cut the sun a bit, especially in my morning ride into the rising sun. Currently I ride with sunglasses, but the clear visor causes my helmet to turn into a greenhouse! After 3 years riding in the Vegas sun, I'm ready for a tinted visor. Here's what I'm considering: 1) "mirrored bronze" because it will cut glare and improve low-light visibility (think ski goggles), 2) Yellow, for same low-light visibility, or 3) "light smoke" to cut the bright sun but still be safe to ride at full dark.
So the issues: I need to be able to ride all the way from full dark to bright sun, sometimes on the same ride (dark at home, sunny by the time I'm to work). I'd like to avoid changing visors, though it's not a deal-breaker. I also frequently ride in foggy/overcast conditions, hence the priority for bronze/yellow visors.
Anyone have any experience with any of these type options? Ideally I'd have one of those photochromic/transition visors, but they don't fit on my scorpion helmet (maybe I need to upgrade to a Bell helmet instead!)

Visor Color?

Re: Visor Color?
Hey guy,
I have never tried bronze or yellow shields. Yellow used to be used to eliminate early morning mists, improve low light conditions and to remove the color blue. Originally used as shooting glasses.
I have tried: clear, light tint, medium tint, dark tint, and mirrored dark. Some if not all have also had fogx, nofog, sunblocker, extra layer of window tint, duct tape (top 1 1/2 ") or some combination of the above. I have even had my optometrist 'double tint' my prescription sunglasses. Never have been able to ride with less than two shields with me at all times. (rain, fog, night, etc.) . . .Untilnow. . . .
I replaced helmets this winter because of the five year rule. After a lot of research and hand ringing I changed brands for the first time in 15 years. I ended up with a Bell Star. All around a better fit for my oval head but I had to go one size larger. All well and good. I decided to try their new ($$$) Transitions SOLFX shield. It's way more than they advertise or I expected. It goes from clear to very dark and back to clear. Which you never notice while wearing it. This shield has some no fog magic too. It was hard for me to keep my Arai's fog free in the rain or really cold weather. So far, the Bell is just remarkable. It takes a lot to get this old guy excited, but this shield is the deal. Disclaimer; no connection with Bell in any way; just good product. This is one of those "why didn't they think of this sooner ideas." Not worrying about having the 'right' tint, and not needing to have a second shield just about offsets the cost. And yes, I am old. Old enough to remember a Bell ad that said; "If you've got a ten dollar head; buy a ten dollar helmet." Bell Stars were $30 then.
I tried both the carbon fibre and their composite. Individual results may vary. I bought the composite, but only partially for the Derek Hess graphics.

Re: Visor Color?
Thanks Geezer! I still have that new helmet alternative rolling around as an option, I was just hoping to get by on a cheaper option. Now I have to put a price on the annoyance of swapping shields each day...

Re: Visor Color?
UPDATE: Thanks to GSGeezer's recommendation, I went with a Bell Revolver hemlet (in hi-viz yellow of course) and shelled out the cash for a fancy transitions visor. I can't believe I waited this long! Rode to work today in 34-degree (F) weather in total dark. No fogging on my crystal clear visor. The gate guard at work really appreciated the flip-up for verifying my ID instead of the usual full-face fiasco too. On my lunch ride the visor went to full dark as soon as I took it out of the helmet bag with no need for my sunglasses, even riding directly into the sun! It's also quieter than my old helmet (how'd THAT happen with a flip-up?) The internal sun shield however, is useless. It's too light to be of much good, and the open/close mechanism feels cheap and flimsy, but I don't really need it anyway with the transitions face shield. Got the lot at Motorcycle Superstore for $213! $99 for the helmet and $114 for the face shield, free shipping and no sales tax.
