I have a motorrad jacket that has clear plastic window on my left sleeve, and I'd carry my ez pass in that compartment.

But my new jacket does not have this clear windowed compartment. Where do you all put your ez pass so as to allow you to "zip" through the toll stations?

I keep mine in the map window of my tank bag. Works fine.

I tried a jacket pocket - no joy - and I didn't always use a tank bag so I figured out a way to mount it on the bike. I made a bracket out of 1/16" aluminum plate that I could use to mount it on the fork tree on top of the right fork leg. To make it removable, I used this 3M Dual Lock "velcro" stuff; the same kind of really strong stuff that comes on the EZ-Pass. That stuff holds the EZ-Pass to the bracket and the bracket to the bike. Sitting on the bike, the EZ-Pass is positioned like it is on the inside of a windshield.

No problems at all with this: EZ-Pass always reads, and it never fallen off (STRONG stuff). Just in case the bracket does come loose from the fork tree, I made a little tab on the bottom that curls under the bottom of the fork tree and keeps it from falling off... It's come loose a couple of times and it just falls back the 1/4" to the handlebar/bar clamp and the tab keeps it from moving any further - gone quite a few miles like that too. It blends in pretty well mounted there too - no one's ever noticed it unless they're looking close (i.e. local club ride, etc).

If you have the BMW Touring Screen mount (used with many windscreens) - there is a big-ass loop that forms the two uprights. I tie-wrapped my EZPass to the bottom of the loop, right above the headlight after painting it black. I place it so the face (supposed to face the windshield) is facing forward, and the EZPass itself is tied down so the step in the back lays on top of the loop. Three healthy size tie-wraps installed vertically hold it on and one horizontally so the vertical ones pull it closer to the loop. Mine also had the leftover velcro lumps from when it had been windshield mounted, and those also help locate and retain the tie-wraps.

It's been that way for about 35,000 miles, after I lost the one out of the window of my tank bag during a trip (I suspect when fueling up..) It really isn't obvious to a casual passerby, and requires removing the windshield to remove.. plus it works just fine there (high-speed lanes and all..)

I heard (no confirmation) that EZPass will charge you for painting the goober (about $15) if you need to return it for some reason, but I doubt if that applies if the battery in it craps out since they just toss them away (no way to open without destroying it.)

I too like zipping through the toll passes and would have probably stuck it to a windshield, but I don't have one yet.

I ride an 07 R12R and it turns out that the handlebars are a little too thin in diameter for the holder.
I guess you could put a piece of rubber or something to add some thickness to the handle bars, but I just wrapped some electrical tape and it seems to hold just fine.

It does however take up some of the real estate on the handlebars.

I've been using my tank bag window lately, but have used the velcro thingies to attach it to MC windshields in the past. Question for Don: Is the EZ Pass (I-Pass in Illinois, BTW) water/weather proof? Sure sounds like it if it lives permanently on your bike.

I've had EZ Pass units on two bikes for at least five years, one mounted behind a fairing and kind of out of the rain, the other mounted behind a windshield that gets wet especially when the bike is left out in the rain all night (usually at rallys). Both still work just fine.
BTW: Last year I found out our east coast EZ Pass works just fine in Illinois.

Seems to be. It's a sealed plastic case, no vents in it that I can see. It's sat outside in the rain, been mounted on the bike when riding in the rain, and haven't had any problems with it.

Thanks, Harry and Don. Good to hear that those transponders can take the elements; makes for a lot of mounting latitude.

I-Pass, I-Zoom and EZ-Pass all use the same equipment, and can be used on each others' toll systems. It makes things a whole lot easier for me on the several annual trips I make to New York. Even Ohio finally got into it. About the only place I have found that doesn't take it is Florida. I guess they have their own proprietary system.

I've used EZPass from NJ to California (and up the west coast) and back to NJ, and from Maine to South Carolina. I'm trying to remember if there were any tolls in Canada that it worked with.. might have been around New Brunswick.. (the only place I can remember a toll in Canada..)

I guess there is a reason Florida hasn't seen the light - but hesitate to elaborate on it..

Good news - that toll in St John, NB is gone.

I hung mine inside the saddle bag with a couple of zip ties. Works fine for me. It doesn't have to be in a "clear" area to work.

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area (and I think much of CA) we have Fastrak. Similar concept, probably the exact same technology. Most riders I know don't bother to carry the device. "Best practice" is to register your plate with the system and the camera will catch you when you go through a toll plaza and charge your account. If it doesn't catch you because your topbox is in the way, or you're on the far left side of the lane, well that's a real bummer.

I used to carry it in my tankbag int he foil bag in case I ever got pulled over, but I stopped bothering with that a couple years ago.

That's how I feel about it also. As long as you take the time to register the unit to the plate (done on line), your good. I often wonder why folks get so upset about placing the unit where it can be read, it's really not an issue if you just follow the rules.

Only time I've been asked for the unit is on the Bear Mountain Bridge in New York State. About every third time the unit doesn't register, the attendant asks for the unit, he/she bangs it on the side of the toll booth, holds it in the air, and then opens the gate to allow you to pass. I checked to see if I was charged and their was no charge, so I assume all the theatrics are just to justify the toll keepers job.

I have a friend that towed two bikes to Daytona (Harleys naturally) and when he got his bill he found he was charged three times for every toll he went through. He discarded the foil envelopes and forgot about the units on the bikes. He contacted the EZ Pass people and explained the situation - they basically told him 'TOUGH' it wasn't their problem. So I have no problem screwing them out of a few bucks if I have the chance. I'll have to try the left side of the lane thing.

Same is true here in Illinois, but I was led to believe that it was different in other states. Either low or no tolerance for "no reads" through the tollbooths. Fines as well as tolls are billed to the account holder.

We have three I-Pass transponders and six vehicles that could potentially pay tolls so every once in a while I'll go through a tollbooth (actually we have "Open Road Tolling" in much of Illinois) without a transponder and never an issue. They just charge my account after the fact. As I said, though, I thought the rules varied from state to state. And hey, it doesn't hurt to play by the rules

That works great unless you're in RI where they have drop arms across every lane... can't just breeze right through and bank on the camera reading (or not reading) your plate. They give a toll discount for EZPass too, and if for some reason it won't work (and raise the gate) - they make you pay the full toll charge on the spot. That makes for a fun time if ATGATT and cash isn't exactly handy.

The traffic passes are an RFID device that is actually energized by some of the antennas you see near toll plazas. So long as the pass is not shielded by metal it will emit a data burst the billing system can see.
