Starts like "crap".

Have a 02 with 17k new plugs, sync, valves adj done earlier this season. When starting it, after bike has been sitting (eg over night), the motor will fire up but then sputters and stops. When I hit the starter button for the second time it starts a little rough but then maintains a normal idle. Once warmed up the bike runs very smooth. Any ideas guys?

Problem sovled, TPS adjusted and everything seems fine now. :D Thanks for comments.

Ignoring the fact your fast idle cable freeplay may NOT be correctly set, it could be many things, but 2 of the most likely are air and oil temperature sensors. The IAT (IntakeAirSensor) on the AirBox lid and the oil temp sensor on the engine, above the right cylinder on the crankcase just above the TeleLever. Check their electrical connections for wire breakage, corrosion or terminal wire pull-outs. That damage is more likely than the sensors failing after 10 years and only 17K miles.

Other possibilities are gunky fuel injector nozzles, a malfunctioning Motronic computer (corrupted firmware) or a poor connection somewhere in the EFI circuit like a cracked fuse terminal internal strip, fuzzy relay contacts or damaged injector wires. One member even had a broken ground (brown) wire terminal that was supposed to be attached to the Motronic support frame under the fuel tank . . . . that caused a no-start.

BTW, your fast idle (Choke) lever held all the way to its stop should give you at least 1,600 RPMs after 10 seconds running on a 60degF+ startup.

thanks CycleRob, I'll check all connections, the ironic thing about the poor start-up is that what ever is causing it has completely done away with the bike surging problem !!! The bike runs soooo smoooth once under way I'm tempted not to correct the starting problem.
