Windshield Mounts

Well,

I got the windshield mounted with the 1/4" stainless screws and it is solid. One problem though, even after grinding off the round mounting flat on the back side, the nylon locknuts stick out too far and hit the mini headlight nacel. It is not really a functional problem, but the nut rubbing on the nacel will scar it and not look so good.

I have another set of the windshield mounting brackets, so I decided to drill those out too, but threaded them 1/4-20. Stripped all of the paint off of them and will paint them when the weather is warmer. I am just going to replace the lower mounts with the threaded ones as the upper ones are not a problem with the nylon lock nuts. The good thing is no more wellnuts and a solid mounting. Would have just threaded the mounts the first time, but after project completed brain waves are always better.

Hello,

It is the BMW touring windshield. Go to the link below and then to the "show albums....." on the left hand side. Then to photos and videos. One of the pics shows the mounting bolt setup. Used red loctite on the lower threaded ones on the bottom. Anyone have any experience with the red locktitie? It is a really solid mounting

There are a couple kinds of red Loctite I think (maybe more), but I've used a Threadlocker and a Super Stud Locker that will not come loose without heating. It holds even in high stess, high vibration conditions.

Yeah..... I have used one of the blue locktites on another motorcycle application and it really didn't seem to hold up that well. I saw this red one at a local hardware store and it said it was permanent. What I was wondering is What do I do if I ever need to take it apart? I don't think heating will be an option with the plastic windshield. Then again, one can't go around worrying about.....What if ?.....all the time, either.

you have to heat it up to the temperature approaching the surface of the sun. Use the blue.

Ouch! That's hot! Thanks for the advice, but it's already a done deal. Worst comes to worst, I should be able to dismount the windshield by removing the bracket to frame bolts......edit....got me thinking...or cutting the bolts with a dremel cut-off wheel, or........anyway....shouldn't have to worry about the bolts coming loose........ :D
