hello guys,

I have ready a couple of threads here in regards to the mpg of the 1150R...the most common I have seen is about 42-48mpg..

I just checked mine and its only giving me about 35...I do live in Houston, so its all city mileage...is this a reasonable number?

Also, i just did the 12k mile maintenance but I haven't gotten to the valve adjustment and throttle body synchronization; could these affect the mpg???

Your mileage with a 31/11 (2.81) around town is very typical of mine. I try to keep the RPM's round 3500-4000 minimum around town. Have fun.

+1, in town: ~32mpg,
highway: ~50mpg @ 60mph, ~48mpg @70mph

On a 750-mile trip I rode some two-lane highways at 60mph and kept track of mileage and amount of gas used between fill-ups, and did the same going 70mph (a tad more at times) on interstate highways.

BTW, city mileage varies depending on traffic congestion, stop lights, and right wrist rotation; in our relatively quiet town it typically varies between 29-42 mpg between fill-ups.

That 35 is to be expected in city riding, in fact that's not so bad. I prob get less than that around New Orleans.

Thanks for the feedback, this makes me feel better... I was afraid there was something wrong with my bike which was causing it to consume more gas...

I know you got the new R12; what is your opinion between the two bikes, which one do you like better? are there many differences between them? How do you compare their performance?.

Between the small tank, and the so-so mileage, those are my only gripes with my 02 R1150R.

Man that's a hard question for me.

You need to ride one and see what you think, because I think the differences are somewhat subtle and somewhat no so subtle. The 1150 evolved into the 1200. They're siblings and that is very easy to tell.
the 12 is a "finer" ride; but the 1150 is more raw. There are aspects of the 12 that are def "better," but does that mean maybe a little more "boring?" not sure. The 1150 has more of a personality, I think. It's the bad girl, while the 12 is your prom date.

What I DO NOT LIKE about the 12 is the unreliability of the fuel gauge.

It would be interesting to know what others who migrated from an 1150 to a r1200r think. ON paper the 12 is a better bike, lighter, maybe faster, same quality finish. But when you ride the 2 back to back, or when you ride my two back to back, I think the 1150 makes me grin faster. That could be because I am more accustomed to the 1150, or it could be I've tuned it better than the 12, or it could be because it has a more raw, vroom ride.

speed: 12 faster, esp at speed, but it does not have the OD transmission so you rev higher faster
comfort: the seat to peg distance is greater on the 12, but I think I rest a little harder on my hands on the 12
handling: very close to the same
fuel eco: the 1150 may be a little better
cool factor: I like the retro look of the 1150, esp the dash; My 12 is an 09 so has the "computer " dash. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to, if at all now, but the d*mn fuel gauge is a real issue---maybe more so tahn any issue with the 1150 because it is so much more common. I fully admit that the unreliable fuel gauge very much clouds my enjoyment of the 12, and that will affect my eval here.

If I just rode around town and did weekend trips and did not do the long solo 2-3 week trips I do, I would not have looked at the 12. But I went to the 12 because I thought it would be more reliable longer. I wonder now. I was a happy camper on the 1150. And it was red and Red > Black. How's that for subjective?

You need to ride a 12 to see for yourself. It's fine. On the 2014 s they are getting away from the failure prone fuel strip.

I would not argue with someone who said the 1150 is more of what you got a motorcycle for. Nor would I argue with someone who says the 1200 is the finest BMW they've ever owned.
Your mileage will vary.

I seem to get 42-44 most all the time. I don't do city stop and go traffic.
