State of flux - Progress Update

It's been a while...since the last update, let me bring you up to date.

Feb 2004 Set-up

TBR can and cat eliminator, Techlusion R259 at OEM settings and 3 degree advance with 89 octane gas = 84 rwhp - Dynojet dyno

Feb 2005 Set-up

Removed airbox and installed UNI pod filters, replaced the TBR can with a SS SuperTrapp, with larger internal volume and 18 disks.

The bike pulled 79 rwhp on the dyno and showed F/A ratio in the 14 range, not conducive to power generation. I maxed the Techlusion and picked 1/2 rwhp, still not being able to get the requred air/fuel ratio to produce power. (typically in the 12.8 to 13.4 depending on the engine)

Not having many other options I masked off 50% of the UNI pods filter area, that reduced the air flow and got the HP back to 83 rwhp and due to time and cash constraints left it there. That's the way the bike made the trip to the Beakster Bash II in WV on April this year.

July 2005 Set-up

Explored all posibilities for getting more fuel to the engine, larger injectors, incresed fuel pressure via a new pressure regulator, etc.

Ruled the larger injectors out since their size, 370 cc/min vs 300 cc/min (std) could present some control problems leading to richer than normal mixture at idle speeds. The rule of thumb on injector swaps is keep them to 20% larger if you are planning to use the original ECU.

An external pressure regulator would provided the most range of adjustment, up to ~ 65 psi, once again the rule of thumb is to keep the pressure increase to about 20 psi with the stock pump, however the cost and the installation provided some challenges, so this option was also discarded.

Then browsing through the BMW specs, I noticed that the K1200 bikes use the same fuel system albeit with a higher pressure regulator 3.5 bar or 51.45 psi vs the stock 3 bar or 44.1 psi,on the R1150, that is an increase of ~ 7 psi. The pressure increase provides a larger shot of fuel by the injector over the same on/off time. The regulator cost was around $36 from Chicago BMW. This was the cleanest and least expensive solution, the installation was a cinch since not having the airbox everything is accessible.

I then removed the UNI pod masks (flow restrictors) and re-installed the TBR can after sandblasting and painting Hi-Temp black to match the exhaust.

The other mod that took place was the installation of a set of Bitubos that I aquired from rivi777.

Riding Impressions

I have not taken the bike back to the dyno, the CCP is removed and have run the bike with the Techlusion on and off and quite frankly I can't detect any diference by the seat of the pants. The bike idles much smoother, has a strong pull on all the gears all the way to the limiter, with the exception of 6th....my limiter comes on around 8100 rpm.

Since the last time the bike ran on the lean side I have removed the plugs and kept my eye on them to monitor any potential problems. I threw in
a new set of plugs, single electrode Autolites, after the addition of the pressure regulator and the TBR can and they look great.......my mileage, on the last three tanks has gone from 42 to 46 mpg on 89 octane and my riding habits haven't changed.

On the road manners, all I have to say is that I played with the set-up on the Bitubos, to accomodate the avoirdupois and the local roads, all I have to say is that the character of the bike has changed, that baby is planted and inspires to be pushed. Turn in is easier and requires less effort. The ride is taught and supple and reminds me of my 88 BMW M3. The suspension is also higher, close to an inch. Let us just say that I'm defiitely tippy toeing. I could use a rear spring with a larger spring constant (K), since I'm running max preload......hmmmm, that will make the bike higher yet, time to lose weight.

Future work

My next step is to take it to the dyno, once again, and hopefully compare the cans and the effect of the Techlusion as an adder to the new pressure regulator. There isn't much more by way of external performance mods......my philosophy is no internal mods. The issue of paint is still under advisement.

I have enclosed pics of the bike in the current state, the can and the rear Bitubo can be seen along with the pressure regulators, old, still on the manifold and new, to the right.

BTW, projects and budgets have allowed me some time off, a welcome occurrence if I may say so, and have been taking care of the honey do's and my other projects......like the CB1100F a project bike that I haven't touched in the last three years.

Thanks boxermania....

Any problem in wet weather with those air filters?

Is there a different induction sound without the air box?

What are those two things in the last pic?

Will it lift the front wheel in second gear now?

Not so far, they are somewhat protected by my legs and the jugs. Due to the close cell structure of the filter the water will not bead past it, I will presume that a mist might be possible, that being the case I see it as a free decarbonisation. Actually, I'm looking forward to a rain....to try it.

I can't detect any diference in the induction sound, of course that is with the helmet on.

That is your pressure regulator in the flesh, presently neatly located in the front of your airbox, you cant see it from the outside.

The front wheel will lift if with no other input if I shift a bit to the rear of the bike. I'm trying to master the technique so I can do 3 or 4 mph wheelies, nice and safe.

I love the blacked-out pipes & Two Brothers,
the void where the air-box once was matches the spartan look of the bobbed rear fender,
and I wonder what a single PIAA (of the right shape & size) would look like mounted under your headlamps? Are you considering ever powder-coating the wheels a gloss black?

I'd also like to see the passenger seat replaced with either a blacked-out cargo plate
-or-
replaced with the taller "comfort" passenger seat covered in smooth material that matches the Atlanta Blue of your bike.

As much as I still like the decals on your ride, removing the "R1150R" from your gas tank may add to that spartan look I spoke of earlier. (You can always buy some more & return them in place if need be.)

Very VERY anxious to see what you Dyno at, and if you've attained the desired air/fuel mixture. Would you consider a pair of springs (for YOUR weight) from Hyper Pro Racing Spring Technology? They're progressive, all the rave in Europe (or so I was told), and mine brought the rear-end of my bike up about an inch (oh..... they're moto is "Purple Perfection", guess what color the springs are....)

With your low seat, bar ends, and the airbox removed, cat removed, you've done a remarkable change in esthetics to our R1150R. Very nice.
This bike shows a modified R1150R that hasn't compromised the basic engine design with changes that would shorten longevity.
If you're interested, just because I'm impressed with your work, I'll give you the single spark *silver* spark caps I have leftover from my '02. They clean that valve cover right up. Send me a eMail with your address.

Boxermania a question if you will...what do you think of the dyno jet power comander? Do you you think it might be easier to dial in the A/F ratio with one as opposed to the Techlusion?

Pat, nice comments.......actually the painting of the can black to match the Jet-Hot pipes came out of my half arse attempt to polish the can with a Harbo Freight kit........POS.

Yes, I'm considering PC the wheels, but it will depend on the color combination.

The cargo plate will not work for me since my ample arse is in contact with the raised portion of the pasenger seat, I would slide on the cargo plate. The comfort passenger seat with the bike color has some definite posibilities.

Agree with you on the decals.

I do need a bit stronger spring for the rear Bitubo, since I'm at max preload, the problem is that I,m tippy-toeing right now.......I would stilts to ride the bike with a new spring. That is one of the reasons that I sold an excellent Bill Russel seat to Marc, because it raised me almost 1 inch, with the standard suspension.

Yep, I'm also anxious to see the Dyno results......need to raid the cofee can..... :roll: :roll:

The Dyno Jet Powerr Commander has some problems that the manufacturer is keeping mum about. They have been on and off with the intro and at $495 it doersn't come cheap.

Fuel nanny's irregardless of the manufactirer enrich the mixture by adding time to the open signal to the injector by the bike's ECU. This in essence richens the mixture a bit. Mind you that the amount of time increase is in the millisecond range, less than 2 msec. There some injector timing design considerations that limit the amount of opening time.

In theory the Power Commander is supposed to be able to add and substract time from the injection pulse at several points in the rpm. Technically speaking it shoould offer better tuneability than the Techlusion which only adds time at idle, midrange and top end.

So, in answer to your question the A/F ratio shouild be easier to set up on the PC. Do remember that the fuel nanny's are inexpensive and limited solutions to a full fledged engineering effort.

My experimentation seems to support that swapping the standard fuel pressure regulator set @ 44 psi by one from a K bike set @ 51 psi at a cost of ~$36 is a far better solution than a fuel nanny and accomplishes the same or more.

Is this something you would recommend someone with average mechanical skills do to an otherwise stock bike as a solution to surging?

I'm convinced the surge that I have is related to fuel delivery or throttle position sensing which would ultimately affect fueld delivery.

A 36$ self installed cure would be miraculous!

Brian.....

Caution there Kemo Sabe.....first, the jury is not out.....I want to see some numbers. The feel, seat of the pants and the engine checks are all positive.

It is an absolute beach to get to it on the standard bikes, you have to not only remove the tank but pivot the back frame on the bike to get to the airbox. Rememeber that I did away with the airbox.....

You are correct in the assertion that it is the least expensive way to enrichen the mixture, on a stock bike. :roll: :roll:
