System Case Luggage Rack Issue

Adding system cases to my 2002 r1150r. Existing racks and tail plate already on bike. There seems to be a plug or cap of some sort where the case latch secures to. How do i remove that plug/cap covering the small recess where the case latches? Cant seem to pry it out and off and I don't see any screws attaching it.
Any ideas?

Search "system case mounting question" in this forum. That should help.
There is no plug to remove from the rail.

it's just a moulding mark, as said - there's no cover.

It seems to me it is something they put in after the moulding.
Maybe they needed a hole to keep an internal stiffening inplace during the general moulding.
They might covered the hole with an insert.
It's there as it's supposed to be.
Ands it's there on all the racks.
So why do you want to remove it?

Looking at it I thought that the latch from the case hooked up in there. I have a set of the straight racks also, and on those there is a square recess where the latch hooks into. I thought that the loopy racks that look better and support the tail rack, had the same recess, but that it was just covered/plugged as these racks did not have cases installed.
So I guess I was mistaken and the latch works by simple compression with no recess required.
Now just trying to figure out how to keep the bottom of the cases secured.
By the way....here is my rig which I just shipped from Maine to North Carolina, and will be riding from NC to AZ leaving on the 2/20.
......and to add to the challenge I have a terminal illness with no cure. I can not walk, can barley speak, choke while eating, and have difficulty breathing. However, I can still swing a leg over..... so I can still ride.
Should be an awesome adventure..

I reckon it's the other way round - they initially designed the racks WITH a slot that the catch tucked into - but then (probably) found that the cases didn't stay tight very well, then reasoned that some compression would hold the cases in place better and chopped off the bit in the mold that created the hole in the rack. the 'cover' we can see is classic injection moulding "there was an insert here but we took it away".

Still don't think so
If the pin for creating the hole was shortened/cut away, there would be no space around the "insert".
But whatever we think of it, it's there and its there to stay.
Picture of space around the insert:

How the panier clamps the rack:

Just had a close look at your picture and it looks like you have another rack.
Didn't know there was any and probably I'm wrong.
Here's a pic of mine:
BTW the paniers have two tabs on the bottom/front.
they fit over the tab of the tab of the pillions footrests

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been traveling.
Yes mine is exactly like the one in the pictures. Due to my straight racks having a recess, it made me think the swoopy racks had it covered up.
Good to know that the cases just use the pilot peg for bottom support.
Thanks for the replies.

I had the same concern about securing the cases better than just a compression fit. I followed (CycleRob? or Tower, can't remember which) advice about putting a small pin thru the catch and lower guide. It works great. Keeps the bags from lifting so they are staying put on the rail. This works for me since I rarely take the cases of the bike during the riding season.

I do wish you the best, ride while you can! Nice looking bike you have there. Whose side car is that? I'd be interested in something like that for my 1150R.
