'02 bike, I'd like lights that mount on the forks for night riding and to increase my visibility with autos. Small penetrating LEDs are probably fine. Any recommendations? I'd probably install myself.

I bought cheap (35$) halogen fog lamps at Walmart and mounted them down at the bottom of the forks near the axle. The work well, and it is easy to find replacement H3 bulbs.

I am thinking about adding some accent lights higher up, maybe on my GS hand guards:

I have the Mondomoto MM10 as well and I love them. They really increase your visibility at night.

My lights are wired through a relay.

sstein, where is that relay? One you added? Excuse the question - electrics is my weakness.

I bought a pair of inexpensive 9 watt led running lights off Ebay. Cost about $25 shipped. Too bright to pass Va state inspection(I remove them for inspection) but I don't run them at night unless no traffic. They are incredibly bright and extremely visible to daytime traffic. There are two led brand devices I'd look for--one is Cree and the other Epistar. Both incredibly bright and very inexpensive. The current draw is less than 2 amps total for my two lights. Probably less than 20% of what a pair of typical 55 watt halogens pull and they only get slightly warm.

I was running a set of PIAA 1100X lights on my Rockster, they're wired on via a relay to the battery. The relay is switched by the Full (High) beam instrument warning light circuit, so the relay isn't stealing any current from the existing full beam circuit and it's easy to wire in.

The PIAA's come on with High beam only, I don't want to be blinding anyone when I'm riding in traffic.

Unfortunately both of the light units have been damaged recently by an off, so I'm starting to look for replacements for the winter riding.

Where do most of you guys mount your lights ? I have a set of Hella ovals mounted on the "RCU" brackets. Their OK?...but I do not care for them being so close to the turn signals..[they wash them out] IMO...and I would like a more pronounced "triangle".
I read somewhere? that the triangle is one of the most noticed "attention-getters"

The oil-cooler pods get in the way for fork mounting.

I added a relay which I stuck in the empty ABS holder next to the battery. I have the lights mounted at the bottoms of the forks. The forks each have a tab that will accept a screw. I screwed an L-bracket onto each and mounted a light on each bracket.

Maccraith - How do the Mondomoto lights mount under the tank? Are the necessary brackets included?

Mine are on aluminum brackets just below and to either side of my headlamp. Beware of lower fork mounting as there is a lot of vibration transmitted directly to the lamp element itself which will shorten bulb life.

The thought goes that it's important that the individual lights, including headlight, form a distinct shape identifiable by cagers so that they can judge your place in space and speed. Having lights away from the headlight would be key. The forks location triangle seems like it would be best. Another color (amber or yellow) seems to increase conspicuity, but I'm concerned that I'd use any practical increased visibility from yellow lights - I was hoping for that in cornering at night.

I would post a pic, but I cannot find simple, clear directions on how to do it. However, I can simply describe the mounting.

I removed the front screw and nut from the plastic oil cooler cover on either side of the bike. Then mounted the lights "upside down" from the hole where the stock screw and nut had previously been. I had to buy a new screw and nut for this purpose - a screw that would fit through the hole on the light and go all the way through the hole on the plastic cover. I believe I started with a 2 inch screw and cut it down to the size needed.

This mounting is simple, fast, effective and attractive. I am pleased with the result.
