Spare key

Post by racurley »

What's the best process to get a new ignition key made? I have one but would like a spare. I see that blanks can be ordered. Is the best bet to have a locksmith cut one or do I have to see the dealer? I tried Home Depot and Walmart and they aren't able to duplicate these.

I had mine cut by a locksmith. He had the blank. Considerably cheaper than buying a blank from BMW. Take your bike when you go. You will want to test the new key and the locksmith may want to see bike and ownership papers.

Old Mac's right. Make sure you go to a lock smith, tried to get this done at home depot & they didn't work in the least. You'll likely need to buy some blank keys online though...many lock smiths won't have these.

I had four made. It costs maybe $20.00 between buying the keys online and having the lock smith spend 3 minutes of his time making them...

Just be sure to test them when you get it...like Mac recommended.

Let us know how it works out.

Good luck.

Agreed, my local Cothrons in Austin, TX had the blank in stock and charged a total of $5.75 for 3. Yep 3! :D

My used 04 came with one working key and 2 blanks. One blank had the BMW black rubber grip, the other was just a short metal blank without the grip. Last week I took them to my local locksmith who cut them both in a couple minutes for $4.00. They work great although not as smooth as the working key. I taped the little metal one on my bike in a hard to find location.

Went to Key West Lock and Safe in Va Beach on this lovely 72 degree day on Dec 1. He found a BMW car key blank and was able to duplicate my bike key. I also have a Coocase topcase that has an electric lock with a fob but no key to fit the manual lock. The locksmith found a blank to fit the pattern and then used a file to make a key. That was really pretty cool to watch him do that. Got 2 bike keys and a 2 trunk keys for $24 including him making the key.
