Do any of you run just a y-pipe with the short slash cut pipe on your R1150R ?

I don't, but suspect you'd find the lack of exhaust back pressure to really kill the performance (unless you're able to make appropriate FI and ignition changes).

Seriously, there's no advantage besides civil unrest. I started up my bike after installing y-pipe, before silencer/muffler was attached: loud bark, un-cultured, chew on tinfoil discordant.

My Buell was painfully loud, but it retained a semblance of soul. Not so a loud boxer.

I took the cat converter off of my R850R and replaced it with the DanMoto pipe, the version that has the center stand bracket. It was an easy switch with one caveat: The pipe clamps DanMoto supplies are too flimsy and you should use the stock BMW ones. You will have to shim under them, I used SS shim stock, as they are a tad large for the DanMoto pipe.

With that caveat, the install was easy and the stock muffler and shield fit the DanMoto pipe perfectly.

No trouble with my Y-pipe plus stock silencer / muffler setup. Saves about 15Kg in weight, too ! Don't forget to reset the ECU after mounting the Y-pipe, details elsewhere on this forum: basically lift the fusebox lid, pull fuse #5 and wait for about half-a-min before re-inserting. Flap the throttle to and fro a coupla times. Done.

I have done what you are suggesting.

Don't. The sound is hideous. All of the high frequencies stay in the note and it has a hollow ugly noise. It is truly as vile as everyone has suggested.

I currently use a y-pipe and a Neptune shorty muffler. The sound is gorgeous. The muffler damps out the high frequencies and leaves it with a pleasant rumble that is neither discordant nor offensive. On the over run it is a thing of beauty. It's a shame that boxers are so heavily muffled normally. I have ridden them for a very long time and generally they sound like a sewing machine having unnatural congress with a vacuum cleaner.

Options
1 - Y-Pipe + muffler (standard or custom, your preference.) Nice note. Good weight reduction. Highest cost

2 - Remove Muffler, leave the catalytic converter, and add a turned out exhaust tip. Nice note (not quite as good but very close). lower weight reduction. Cheap as chips. I suggest you try this first. It cost next to nothing and makes it easier to access the rear wheel as a bonus.

My 2c worth.

I totally agree with Soliton. Those are the 2 best options if you want more beautiful noise from your boxer. I opted for Y-pipe and Akrapovic exhaust. How low can the sound of a Beemer go? Take out the DB-killer!

I have been kicking around the idea of knocking out the innerds of my cat like I did on my VW Vanagon.

Loved the sound and power increase after....

Of course on the Vanagon it is a straight through cat, I'm not sure if the beemer is the same?

Thoughts?

one caveat on running a y-piece with a standard can: the exhaust gases will be hot enough to melt panniers :
