So I replaced the stock muffler on my 2004 R1150R with an 8” hot tip. I thought that would allow me to install full size system cases as several people have done as I thought I’d read in the forums.……

BUT….looking at the bike I noticed the passenger foot-peg plates have the plastic cap on the back that fits/supports the front side of the cases. On my R1150R the left side passenger foot-peg plate is bumped out about an inch or so to make room for the muffler.

My question: Will a full size bag (and which one) have a notch in the right place of the case to accept the ‘bumped out’ support cap on the left side of my R? Thanks!

Answer: no.

But if you do some homework via the search results, then you will learn how to mount the full size left case.

You need to either fit a different (home-brew) bracket to the foot peg, or fit some locating lugs to the full-size pannier.

I went for the latter route with a couple of light metal bent plates bolted to the pannier in a suitable place.

the main weight of the pannier is taken by the pannier rails and the upper hooks - the lower support is mostly just to stop the thing swinging around. (it takes some weight, but not a huge percentage.)

As Sweatmark said it is not a direct fit, it is easier to adapt the case to the bracket than to adapt the bracket to the full size case. A piece of C channel of suitable size bolted to case would be the easiest way to go.

Thank you all! I searched the forums some more and indeed found examples of adapting the left system case to accept the ‘bumped-out’ bracket.

So just to make sure before I order my cases.

For my 2004 R1150R I should order (both) System Cases that are listed for the R1150RT. The right case will be a perfect fit and the left case I can adapt to accept the bracket? Correct?

You have your answer about the bracket. You will love the extra capacity.

I always thought that it would be harder - but the panniers only add about an inch (maybe 2) to the overall width. If the bars go through easily - you're ok.

(albeit the Rockster bars are a lot wider.... )

The extra capacity comes from the inside. Where the exhaust was! No extra width over stock saddlebags. Although I do have some white paint on my pannier because I forgot about the extra width of saddlebags versus no saddlebags!

If you look around for an exhaust lowering kit, {Wudo} for example included the [foot] relocation bracket for the left bag. This is what I have on my "04", along with a Remus Y-pipe & muffler. Although not loving the sound...it all does work well together as far as fit.

Yes definitely want the extra capacity. The full size case is 20% (6 liter) larger than the exhaust impaired version.

I'm pretty happy with the exhaust sound with the 8" tip and no muffler. It's a bit louder but no big deal, ride with earplugs anyway.

I also wanted a larger left (port) bag, and bought some BMW touring lids. They are about four inches wider than the standard lids. I also have the city lids,which are great for everyday use. You may be able to find them used for less money.
