All of you DIY servicers: Fuel filter- when to change?

Hey all you cheap, self servicing, do all your own maintanace people ( me included)
I know that the manual says 24000 mile on the first fuel filter change ( provided you use good gas) . I've got a 4000 mile trip coming up, and have my 18000 mile service to be done ( by me
) this weekend, and I'm wondering if I'm just "over- servicing" if I changed the fuel filter now. I was hoping to put it off until the 24k service, but don't want any problems on the road, so I'm considering doing it now.
has anyone had a proven problem with a fuel filter "clogging" prior to their 24k service?
