That's some helpful stuff. I've saved the link to my "maintenance/tech" folder for future reference. Thanks.

p-u-h-l-e-e-e-z-e!
It's not about me!!
I wanted everyone to post a LINK to their R1150R Album. There's lot's of them burried out there . . . somewhere. What I didn't care to see, as fascinating as it might be, is albums made up of mostly just kids, dogs, parties, or X-girlfriends. We (I) wanna see your bike, modifications, parts of it, parts for it . . . and where you've been with it. If you and your S.O. are in it too . . . that's cool. We'll be able to pic the thumbnails we wanna see. Think like DJ DownUnder on a ride . . . . without all the women.

Gimmee some LINKS ! :D

Fascinating!!!!!!!

Did your fuel consumption increase after increasing the snorkel's intake area?

Cheers

Cyclerob - What brand of gasoline do you use mostly? What octane? The inside of your engine reminds me of the MG TD I had as a kid. I had to "decoke" the thing every 10,000 miles. But that was due to a faulty engine design. I'm surprised that your bike was so cruddy in only 40,xxx miles and this is with "modern technology." (High compression, fuel injection/management, BMW engineering....)

I think you mentioned that you don't ride it hard. Do you think riding easy and not stressing the engine leads to the build-up? It just really bugs me that if I ride like a banshee, I'm gonna have premature wear and if I coddle the thing, it's going to need decarbonizing.

How can we prevent this carbon build-up?

YEAH!! Now we're on the right track!

No. It was mostly for cosmetic improvement when the clone of a `57 Chevy's homely, industrial looking, airfilter snorkel was cut off. It had to provide some power increase as my bike Dyno'd at 80.3 RearWheelHP. Didn't check the HP before. The sound is not loud. The look is much better!!

1) I used all brands of plus & premium, to avoid pinging (price shopping) -until- the decarbonization allowed me to use Regular grade without pinging.
2) Ride it hard, the way you want to. All you're gonna stress is the life of the rear tire! The gasoline is partly to blame for carbon deposits and who knows which one is best? Sparkplugs give a clue, but you have to look in the hole to see the pison crown for the real thing. Instead of the brakes, I downshift a lot and all the time. I like it. The high vacuum of engine braking sucking small amounts of oil past the rings and valve guides is the most likely cause . . . even though I've never seen any blue smoke clouds on decel. It could be the brand of gas too. I've seen heavy carbon deposits on a car headgasket job I did and he said he always used Getty gas, . . . which I now avoid.
3) I use Seafoam from an auto chain store like Advance Auto Parts -or- NAPA. With today's CRAPPY quality, toxic soup fuels I am adding 4 ounces to every 3rd tankful to keep the injectors clean. To DeCarbon, they recommend feeding 1/3 to 1/2 pint into a shared vacuum line and shutting the engine off for 5 minutes. My bike just started exibiting the same "hard cold starting" that others have mentioned in another post. The fuel is the only reason for it taking 6 "turns" to start instead of 4. You know; woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo - vaa-vaa-vrrooom!

To everyone else, let's stay on the original topic and keep the links to your albums come'n.

Tom, good to see you using your Beemer the way it should be used, instead of just riding to the cafe!!
