Starter Cover

I saw the R1200R at my local dealer yesterday and noticed BMW did not provide a starter cover as they did on the R1150R or even the current R1200GS.

Does anyone know 'why' BMW would not do this? Ironically, Frank Stevens from BMWNA happened to be in the showroom and I asked him about it. He was surprised as I was to see that it wasn't there.

The simple solution seems to be to order one from a GS and attempt to retrofit it. I found it interesting since BMW is now charging for a center stand that they would not provide this. I liked the look and feel of the bike as I sat on it. Certainly is much lighter!

Thank you for any insight you can provide.

Maybe it's another optional extra.. :D ...I noticed it also and thought it looked odd..(and I took these pics)...in fact the whole foot peg area looks empty.

That muffler sure is a biggie... :shock:

It's a NAKID bike! I think it's got too much plastic on it already. One of the problems I have with BMW's - aesthetic wise - is they seem to take an automotive position to design: cover it up with swoopy plastic bits. I like the Italians - Moto Guzzi, Ducati - when it comes to design: Lets design the machine and be done;

Jbuzbee,

+1 on that. My main complaint stylewise on the R1200R is that huge muffler. The bike was so quiet (and I like mellow bikes) that without earplugs in on the text ride I could still barely hear the engine. In fact, I'd say it was Camry quiet. Its a motorcycle for gods sake, gives us a bit of noise. I think what I'm hearing is the transmission, valves & intake.

The dustbin sized can is a ploy to make you buy the aftermarket Akrapovic...
The lack of starter cover is to save weight...
