Has anyone here bought the new BMW charger that works with the can bus system? Any recommendations or warnings?

Can Bus Charger

My reccomendation would be to buy a Battery Tender Jr and run the fused pig tail directly to the battery. Very easy to do in the new R1200 bikes. that way you would have a place to plug in your heated clothing, etc and would not interfear with the can bus system. Cost less than the BMW charger. When my bike is parked in my shope the Tender Jr is always plugged in. My old R1150R bought in early '02 still has the origional battery and works fine. Both bikes have always used my method, It works for me.

Battery Tender
Are there old and new battery tender types? One for new gel type batteries for instance and an older type? I have one that I used on my old airhead and then on my 98 K1200RS. Is this the type you refer to or is there a newer type? It seems like I have heard something about the older ones not working on new batteries because of "charging threshold" or somesuch.

Allan, I was under the impression that the Battery Tender would not be recognized by the CanBus. Mine did nothing when plugged in.The AGM BMW charger I have works just fine through the access. outlet. It cycles the battery while in maintain mode. NOW, with my K bike it was another story. Outlet worked / didn't work...etc... it is a know problem with the new K bikes.AllanCook wrote:You can choose the $30 Battery Tender Jr. or the $140 BMW AGM charging device, which seems like a real PITA to use. Why BMW didn't design this circuit so that a charger could be plugged into the accessory socket without any hassle is a mystery to me.
Ahh the bikes I've ridden. So many bikes, so little time!
