Windscreen summary and question

Post by rdsmith3 »

I am searching for a windscreen that looks great, works great, and costs very little. HA HA

I currently have the fly screen, which looks great, but that's about it.

I will be starting a new job that involves a lot of highway miles, so I may need some more wind protection.

Here is a summary of what seems to be available for a BIG screen. From a cost perspective, the New Zealand Visual Screen is a bargain. Does anyone have one of these? I seem to recall that someone from down under had one. Do you have pictures? Does it work? I am 6'2" with a 34" inseam so I need something tall.

Thanks.

See DJ's post "A big day down under" to see a pic of my bike with the R1200C screen attached. The upper mounts are from the NZ company and the lower mounts are the standard fly mounts bend further out.
It looks good, i am 6"3" and after a couple of attempts at installing at the right angle is now perfect. Only have some minor wind buffets depending on where the wind is coming from. Most of the time is fine.
I paid about $135US and the added advantage of the BMW imprint on the screen and is very thick and looks like it was made for the R.
Check out the BMW website - accessories for the R1200C - for a pic on this bike.

Look at National Cycles - their Street Shield EX - $119.

Although not listed for the 50r - with a little modification for the lower mounts it fits great. A friend who has had a Parrabellum for 40K miles ( and is having to replace the second screen due to cracking) is going to chaenge to one too.

Clean smooth ride, no buffeting, good looking and can be dismounted in about 30 seconds.

I have the touring screen and mostly like it.......I'm 5'10", easily see over it and don't experience excessive buffeting. It eats those big insects that otherwise hammer your faceplate, chest and neck, and is surprsingly quiet with me shoei rf900.

I just switched from the sport shield to the touring shield and am pretty satisfied. The sport shield had a lot of buffeting at highway speed which the touring shield all but eliminates. IMHO, the touring shield is much better for long highway trips.

Marko,

Do you have to buy the mounts separately from the NZ company -- from a different place than where you got the screen?

Acacia,

Any pictures?

Thanks.

NZ Screen

Post by MIXR »

Bob,

Flick me an email address via the board contact messages and I'll send some pics of my 'Bikescreens.com' screen.

Cost was AUD$200 shipped here, and it's about the same for them to ship it to you (US$160??).

Uses the flyscreen mounts, so that makes life easy. Works really well at speed (180 km/hr plus). Good quality material as well.

Only downside is the flimsyness of the BMW flyscreen mounts, but that can be overcome by adding a rubber channel to the lower curve of the screen so that the screen bottom edge 'rests' on the headlight shell. This stiffens the whole thing up nicely.

That little feat is achieved by using longer mount screws in the top holes of the flyscreen bracket and adding rubber spacers to 'tilt' the screen slightly forward. Improves airflow and forces the screen onto the headlight shell at the same time.

Have about 15,000 km on mine now and haven't touched it since fitting.

Pics will tell the story. Mick.

Yes, see below for the mounts, and the screen is genuine BMW.

http://www.bikescreens.com/xml/universal_screens.xml

Go to the "Universal handlebar mounts" for the pic of the mounts.
The shaft was about twice needed, but after three trial and errors, i settled on the angle, then hacksawed off the excess.
I have been going to get some nice small diameter chrome mounts made but have not got around to it yet.
These are quite good though, i did need to drill the upper holes in the R1200 screen slightly bigger to fit the screw mechanism through though....not a hard job though.

Buying a new digital camera - will get a picture soon for you - but you can go to National Cycles web site and, if I recall, look under screens for the R1100R pre '97

I'm 6' w/30" iseem so I may be same waist up. I use the BMW tour shield, I find it to be about as good as a windscreen can get without going to one of those hidious looking parabelums@ twice the price. Its keeping most of the bugs off my face shield and hitting just above, top of helmet and wind screen is getting all the bug goo. Try Chicago BMW on line, the sell every thing @ 20% off. Order the windscreen kit only, the mount kit in catolog is not needed, you need a BMW accessory catolog to get part #'s from.

PS flanders is a great place to live in NJ, I moved to AZ 5 yrs ago, lived in Freehold 27 yrs, raised in Edison, class of 68 :D

windscreen summary and question

Post by Habu »

I use a Givi A620 and am very happy with it. I originally had this screen on an SV650, and put in on the R "temporarily" until I figured out what I wanted to do for a permanent screen. It worked so well, and looks pretty good (IMHO) so it's still there. I like it because it has 4 point mounting. Cost at the time I bought was about $120 and you can still get it for that. Don't have a picture handy, but here's a link to one with the A620 on a Bandit. Good luck. Let us know what you decide on.

decision

I decided to go with the BMW touring screen. I got it from Chicago BMW for $180, which is 20% off. I should have it in a week.

touring shield

Post by bakernks »

I have this shield and it is very quiet at speed. I routinely cruise at 80-85 mph and this shield does a great job.

I just finished a 425 mile trip with the touring screen. It was a combination of highway and back roads. I am 6'2" with a 34" inseam.

Anyway, the touring screen was pretty good. The air hit the top half or third of my helmet, depending on how I was sitting. I had ear plugs on, so it did not seem too noisy. I liked the fact that I could crack the visor open on my helmet, and I did not get any turbulent air in under the visor because the opening was below the top of the screen.

Also, I have the tall seat with a sheepskin pad on top, so I sit a little taller than most riders, and I was still happy with the BMW Touring screen.

So all in all, I like the screen. The looks are certainly worse than the fly screen, but it does not look bad for a big screen.

Now for the bad part.

The screen came with three long well nuts (correct) and one short one (incorrect). Fortunately, my local BMW dealer, Garden State BMW in New Jersey, very graciously provided me with a free well nut of the correct size the night before I was due to leave on this trip.

Also, the helpful little L and R labels on the part were incorrect on the bottom two arms (the ones that come out of the turn signal mounted brackets). I spent about 15 minutes looking at the grainy, faded, black and white picture that BMW calls instructions. I kept comparing the arm that was labelled L to the left side picture they show, and I kept thinking I must be doing something wrong. Finally, I decided that BMW must be wrong. I picked up the part labelled R and it was indeed the left side part.

My windshield must have been packed on a Monday morning.

Once I got it installed, I was happy with it. The quality seems pretty good. It makes a nice thunk when big bugs hit it. I did not see any movement at highway speeds up to 85 mph or so.

I would recommend this wind screen. At $180 from Chicago BMW, it is a relatively good value (for a BMW part) compared to some of the other screens.
