R1150R soft case

I have recently aquired a 2003 R1150R, and I am pondering about fitting a soft case to the luggage carrier. As a newbie to this bike I have two questions;

1: Will the soft case fit the standard luggage rack?
2: Is it is possible to order the soft bag with the same key code as the ignition, hard cases and seat lock?

Soft Case

If you are talking about the BMW soft tailbag, it does not lock so no key codes required. It fits the BMW tail rack.

A better option IMO is a GIVI topcase. They lock, look good and can be ordered in different sizes. I have had one on each of the three RR's I've had.

Injun, yes you can have the lock cylinder rekeyed to match your ignition key. It's the standard BMW lock cylinder. The kit is normally marketed for the K1200RS but it does fit the R1150R rack. The lock actually locks the kit to the bike, but the case and its contents are NOT secured.

See an earlier post of mine:

-BMW Large Luggage Rack/Mount Plate
-BMW Codeable Key and Lock Kit

danstl must have thought you meant lock the content of the bag..he's right.

Tony is also right..you can have the locking mechanism that locks the bag to the bike re keyed to match the bike's key...it's a nice tail bag but not cheap.

I got this bag used and I like it. I have the side bags for anything that needs to be locked, but this is nice for going point to point, throw in a newspaper or my purse or whatever it is I just bought at the store. If I'm running in to Starbucks I can throw my gloves and do-rag in it. It's roomy enough for day use and light and easy to store. I prefer it over a tank bag. New it is expensive though. But isn't all BMW stuff?

Since I have two of the locking plates, I have this bag or the camera/pelican case that can interchange on the back rack.

I have a Pirate's Lair backrest. There are many bags that secure to the backrest. I don't use mine much, but it is much less $ than the BMW - of course doesn't lock or lock to the bike.

The point is ... if you are considering a backrest - my dear Judy won't leave home without it - there are many more options.

(Small hijack - I clicked on Darcym's link - 'ol dopey me, I assumed it was a pic of her bike bag. Of course, it was a link to her photo site. I gotta say,

WOW

- talent is always worth noting.)

I have one of these bags too and yeah you can lock the plate down. :)

Mind you...... the newer tailpack designed for the K1200R and K1200S fits perfectly and is a fair bit bigger, AND is properly waterproof.... ;)

I can highly recommend the K-series bag.

(only pic I could find)

....I did mean you can't lock the bag to keep people out of it. It's been so long since I had one, I forgot you could lock it to the luggage rack.

A better solution is to install a Givi rack. That gives you a lot of more functional and lockable case options. I've had one on my last two RR's and a K12RS.

Hey DJ,

I'm confused. Does this kit include a full luggage rack for the R1150R? Or just a mounting plate that attaches to the existing BMW luggage rack? It says Large Luggage Rack/Mounting Plate". The link to the website even says that the luggage rack is required to use the soft case kit. What rack is it talking about? The luggage rack that comes with the kit or the original factory BMW luggage rack for the R1150R that the mounting plate can attach to?

I really like the case and am thinking of buying one. But I don't want to buy a second luggage rack since my R1150R Series 80 already has the BMW OEM luggage rack with stealth backrest. Anyone know the details?

I think the soft case is one price and the mounting plate (which comes with a lock and key so it can be locked to the rack) is a separate price.

If they say it's a kit..maybe it's the case and mounting plate...I don't think it would also mean the rack...the mounting plate mounts to both the old K12RS and the R1150R rack..the pic shows the K bike rack..I think.

I don't have one..I'm no expert on this..just passing on what I know.. :D

the bike has a silver coloured plastic rack. (that photo shows the K12RS version)

the case has a black coloured plastic rack. (referred to above as the "Large Luggage Rack/Mount Plate").

the black rack/plate will lock down to the silver rack.

the black rack is available seperately and is normally priced seperately to the bag (although you might be getting them together as a "kit").

the "soft case" straps to the black rack using strong velcro (with eyeholes on the strap so you can lock it/cable tie it more securely, but the velcro is strong enough for 130mph+ I promise. ;) )

the soft case also has built in straps that poke out from the underside of the bag so you can "bungee" it directly to the pillion seat.

HTH. :)

oh - for the R1150R OE silver rack I still recommend you look at the K12R/K12S tail bag. Check the prices against the two bags because I promise you, the K-series bag is bigger, waterproof, and easier to mount. (the ONLY issue with it is that it doesn't come with a shoulder strap).
If your dealer says it won't fit.... I can promise you he's wrong. ;) I'm currently using one regularly, and have used the older one for over 2 years. My wife got one with her K12R and I was so impressed with it I got one for myself :D.

Thanks for the info riceburner, it makes sense now. Although, I think I like your recommendation for the K12 case better. Does this case require a mounting kit too or do those 4 straps I see on the corners of the case in the picture sufficient to hold it to my existing OEM luggage rack?

(If you were seriously asking what a "do-rag" is....)

Do-Rag = Yankee term for Bandana or head scarf. What's the Aussie term for Do-Rag? "Roo-Rag" perhaps?

"do-rag" :
That's what I call it. It's commonly used by Hardley riders in place of a helmet. I like to use mine under the helmet. It helps to keep the hair from turning to helmet head and the helmet to smelly head.

It actually works by having a "strap" on the underside that hooks under the OE rack and you use 2 straps at the front, looped around the grab handles to keep the bag pulled forward. If I get a chance this weekend I'll take photos of mine for you?

FYI... another nice option is the Chicane Mesa Rack Bag or Chicane Dune Duffel... both will mount on the BMW rack mounting plate and both are pretty neat bags... for instance, the rain cover is built in so there's never a problem of being caught in the rain while the rain cover's at home. I have the Mesa on my 'R (stole it from my K1200GT  ) and like it a lot!!

See http://www.chicaneusa.com/mesa.htm and http://www.chicaneusa.com/dune.htm ... both with shoulder straps.
