The battery is under the fuel tank. I believe that you can get to the terminals by just lifting the tank from the rear, rather than removing it and messing with the QDs. I'm sure that others on this board will provide you with better instructions on this.
A much easier solution is to get the power outlet, which can be used to charge that battery as well as to provide power for a GPS, heated suit, etc. The Battery Tender should have the BMW plug included with the other accesories as a standard item.
It's been a while, but I remember the outlet as being about $20. Installation is easy - there is a cut-out in the case by the starter for it and the wiring is already in place there. I'm certain there are instructions posted somewhere on this site. The toughest part is avoiding the exposed hot lug on the charger (you'll see what I mean).

You can also take off the easily removable starter cover and attach the positive cable to the main wire on the starter. Then the ground can hook to a good connection on the frame or engine nut.
It's really convenient though to get the accessory outlet installed and plug right into it with a BMW plug adapter.

If you have or install the powerlet outlet, and you bought a generic Battery Tender, (not from BMW) you will also need the following adapter:

...it can probably be found at most dealers too.

At the risk of sounding ignorant: what kind of battery do you have? Is it the old style cell battery or one of the new gel types? That battery tender might not be the right kind, could do some damage.
