Hello,

Two days ago after a short ride the front of the engine started to whine. After some reseach and fact my bike has 38K miles on it, eveyone felt it was the poly v belt.
I changed the belt, thought as was well, but on the way to work today the noise came back.
Strange thing was the noise didn't change with throttle, it was a consistent noise, I honestly thought there was an air leak or something.
Once back to work, I called the BMW dealer and talked about it. Tech felt like it was the pump.
After I left work today on the way home, I pulled out of the lot, gave it some gas, and *engine shut off*.
I guess he was right it was the pump, but I would like some second opinions and any ideas on best place to get a replacement.

I know the fuel pump is not a cheap item for this thing. I have seen some occasional deals but if you get shocked by the dealer price for a new pump, these guys are a good alternative.

Stupid question, but... did you check to see if you had any gas?

I only ask because I had the exact same thing happen to me on my bike. For a day or so, I heard the whine, and thought 'belt or pump failure?'. When my bike died just after completing my first oil-change, I was convinced I'd blown the engine somehow. As I waited for the tow truck, it occurred to me to check the gas (this was the first tank of gas I'd put in since buying the bike). Sure enough, my tank had no slosh; bone dry. After adding a little gas to it, the bike started up, rode to the nearest gas station, and was fine for the ride home.

The low fuel bulb tested fine, so it has to be the sending unit. On an 1150, that's a separate, replaceable unit. On a R1100R, it requires a complete replacement of the pump assembly plate (not the pump).

Once the weather turns nice, I'm planning on driving down to my dealer to have them confirm and repair. Forunately, my extended warranty should cover everything but $60 of it.

Luckly I was just in the process of removing the tank when I found it.
