Hi my name's Michael and I am the one who bought Gary's 1150R. I left a message at the buy and sell thread but it somehow got removed. My question is the 1150R came with two different 6th. gear - a long one for touring and a short one for sportier riding - that's what I read, how do I know which one I have on my 1150? yesterday was the first time I rode on it, mostly City so I haven't had a chance to figure it out. Today it's cold, wet and windy again so riding is out of the question.

The taller gear hits roughly 4k rpm at 80 mph (about 84 indicated on the speedometer). Yes, the speedo is off like most bikes and cars.

My rockster reads almost exactly 90 at 5000 RPMs, whatever that means.

When it gets more comfortable to ride I have to monitor the RPM's at certain speeds and figure it out from there and compare it to the postings on this thread.

But for now I content myself with Ohio and Kentucky which have great rides too, especially along the Ohio river.

Mine's doing around 72mph at 4000.

Mine also does ~70mph at 4000rpm. Fortunately it is pretty smooth at that point. I gues at 100mph cruising it might feel a bit frantic.
I'm used to my diesel Passat doing 60 mph at 2000rpm.

Looks like a lot o' people have the "short" gear. Mine's an '02, and in sixth, the indicated speed is exactly double the tach -- that is 4000 RPM at 80 MPH.

I think it is easier to tell on the low side, my 04 has the overdrive 6th and does not like to be in 6th below 65 mph (indicated) at 60 mph the tach reads just below 3,000 RPM. With the shorter gear you would be in the 3,200 -3,400 range at 60 MPH.

I'm sure mines got the short gear, 4000rpm at around 70mph. Gotta be honest, I'm not a huge fan of it. anything above 80 (on my own private road, officer ), and i find myself thinking I've got another gear to go. At 70 it's fine, so I guess it's a good thing to slow me down a bit!

I take it there's no way to change it without getting a different gearbox and spending lots of money?

with the NON-rockster, import for North america R, you almost certainly have the Tall overdrive. top gear, 4k rpms, 80 mph.

There are two ways to check.

One: RPM at 4000 and speedo is 70ish(standard), speedo is 80at 4k(overdrive).

Two: The shift from fifth to sixth is as smooth as shifting between the other gears, then you have the standard. If it feels like a bigger jump, then you have the OD.

Ditto for mine. It's the "overdrive" gearing. In addition to the 2x numbers you can tell there's a pretty big gap between 5th and 6th by the larger fall off in rpm and the drop in pull.

I searched through quite a few posts for some of this info. I own a 2004 Rockster, I'm in the US, my tires only have 2300 miles on them (low wear) and it seems like I have an indicated 75 mph at exactly 4000 rpms. I haven't connected my GPS to verify my true speed, this I hope to do soon. Anyway, it sounds like I have the non-overdrive gearing as there isn't much of a jump from fifth to sixth.

doug you are right. the sport/standard 6th shifts from 5th to 6th the same as it shifts from 4th to 5th. If you have the OD it does not feel right to shift to 6th until you are going over 70 mph. I have had both and both have their advantages and disavantages. Not a big deal in my book.

That's true about the jump between gears. I just sold my 2002 R1150GS (not Adventure) and it had a pronounced jump between 5th and 6th. I live in CA and the speeds are pretty high here, the GS definitely was more relaxed going down the highway.
