My 1150R rattles for a few seconds on start up on the right hand ( from the seat of the bike )side of the engine. is this pending doom or can this be easly fixed. Also does the BMW oil filter have a non return valve in side it to stop the oil from draining off back to the sump when it is switched off???it has 21k miles and is a 2002 model year.

That's the first time I've heard of one rattling on the right cylinder. There are hundreds of posts about rattling left cylinders on start-up, many of which have been fixed with the upgrade to the cam-chain tensioner available for ~$70, but the right side tensioner usually stays full of oil (being mounted inverted under the jug) and doesn't seem to do it. I wouldn't want to steer you wrong, but maybe you could try replacing the right side tensioner with the upgrade?

I've noticed a valve inside the center part of a BMW oilfilter, but I don't think it's an anti-drainback valve, maybe a bypass valve? Anyway, I don't think oil will drain out of the filter when you shut the engine off since it's screwed up into the block, unless it is siphoned out.

yours rode all wright last Wednesday up the A1 rattles/vibes/and squeaks just like mine the only difference is iv got a big screen so don't get as much wind chill

Is the rattle from the engine (pot) or could it be like mine - in the tank? My fuel sensor thingy rattles when idling or at very low revs but only when the fuel level is low.

Re the oil, I have heard that there is a thermostaic valve in the oil coolers - similar to the thermostat in the radiator in a car. That is why when you go for a short run and dont heat the oil sufficiently you will find nothing in the sight glass if you check it. I believe you need to ride for anything up to 20 minutes to open the valves and get the oil circulating through the coolers. If I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me/

i often wondered why the site glass was empty after a short run the oil was not hot enough and the chips are still not cooked
