24K mile service

I bought my r1150r last year with about 20K miles on it. Its performance has been dropping off of late and I feel its obviously time for some service more in depth than an oil change. What all should I be looking to do, and is it too complicated for me to do myself? I have minimal mechanical experience but the person who would be helping me has 20+ yrs servicing his own bikes( harley, triumph etc.). Secondly, what manual should I buy for the bike and does anyone have an idea of the approximate cost of my necessary maintenance. Thanks for any help.

This link has almost everything you need.

You and your friend can change all of the fluids(unless you have ABS brakes). Valve adjustment is pretty straight forward, and the twinmax carb balancer is easy to use.

Just remember to use a torque wrench when you retighten stuff.

I'm about to do a 24K too.

According to BMW:
All the filters need to be changed (including fuel)
All the oils
Generator belt

I was quoted £460 by my dealer which I simply can't afford so I'm doing it myself.

Actually, you can also do the ABS fluid change and bleed. Just completed it this weekend on Mrs. North's R with iowabeester's advice and links:

You can make a filling adapter without the TOP adapter using a ProPex swivel faucet adapter (available at any plumbing or hardware store) and 5 minute epoxying it into a 3/8" opening funnel :) Here's a link to the ProPex site that shows the fitting.

You want the piece that is the insert part with the rubber rounded washer on the other end. This seats nicely into the ABS reservoir filler, but requires a buddy to hold it in place as opposed to the TOP adapter that screws in.

Here's a pic of my finished filler funnelthingy:

For the brake pad blocks, I couldn't find oak as recommended in the service PDF, but discovered that 1/2" plywood quickly sands down to .43". I had the hardware store pre-cut them to the right size so that I didn't have to bring out my saw and fuss with it.

One last little thing I discovered: If you have a mity-vac, this works better than the turkey-baster to "carefully remove old fluid from the reservoirs" . . . less mess.

If you want to save $$ on the TB Balancer see the post from cyclerob near the top of the forum right now: Another good $2 TwinMax substitute.

For the tank removal to get at the fuel filter etc., this is a good pictorial with step-by-step instructions:

My only other 2 pennies worth, is read through all the service literature that you have and make sure you have all the tools, filters, crush washers, clamps, extra fuel-line quick disconnect (for when you break one of yours trying to muscle it apart--can you tell I learned this the hard way  ), plugs, etc. prior to getting started. Then make sure that you have enough beer :D
