Re: 2008 Summer Journey

=D> An excellent and excellently illustrated ride-report, Miss Gypsy ! What amazes me however, is , where and how you find the time to take all those neat photos, write notes ...... AND ride your bike, make camp, talk to people etc. :-k Multi-tasking,perchance? Totally enjoyable report and deserving o...

I can add a little here. Since 1996 I own a R1100R. ABS,Bags, heated grips, small windscreen of course clock and tach. Also have the tubular bars. This, in my opinion was the last year without catalytic converter. With about 90 000 km on it I have no complaints. Early on (under warranty) the transmiss...

1996 R1100R

Say It's dark green, heated grips, ABS, bags.... !
They can take a beating.
But the 96 had a Transmission problem.
Mine was replaced under warranty and they threw in a fresh clutch as well.
There had to be a reason.
But I agree with the naked bike part.

Arbee.... cheers indeed.
You also aid in my renewed appreciation of my semi neglected R1100R.
Exposed Oilfilters are actually Oil-coolers.

Now I understand why I still hang on to my old 1996 R1100R. It will be a Classic, some day ! Also the last year without a catalytic converter. Politically incorrect, but less to go wrong. The starter however was a cheap (french-made) piece of junk. Now replaced.Good for another 10 years.... I hope. :P

tire balance

It is not always what you, or I can do. Not everyone is so equipped.
I also made my own balancer and adapters after a hassle with some independent shops.
On my woodlathe I turned 2 conical half-adapters.
Works great.
So while I agree that do it yourself id an option,
it is not for every-one.

nail in tire

So much sage advise ! Personally I enjoy living just "a little" dangerously. I'd pull the nail out, give the tire a soap test.Check the pressure a few times. If a minute pressure drop (not temperature related) appears, plug the damned thing and try again. More than once have I used automot...

Regarding the Avon tires I agree. Over the years I had sampled many makes and profiles. Since I arrived at Avons Azaros about 3 years ago.... and now of course the Storms....... I have been content and just wear them out and without hesitation replace them. Cupping the front tire ? No longer ! Liste...

dragon.

And of course, everyone is fully aware, that "the Dragon" is heavily policed these days. It was not always so. Maybe an easy exploratory run....both ways first? One road that I think is very entertaining is(60) from Dahlonega to Suches.... then east on 180. This is in northern Georgia, Jus...

I have the 1996 R1100 R. Speaking of the ABS .... I like it. Has saved my A.s a couple of times in the wet and on unpaved roads. BUT make sure you have a fully charged Battery. It seems the ABS is Voltage-sensitive. At least mine is. Also there were transmission and clutch problems in 1996. But fixe...

gypsy rally ?

Now that sounds like a smart idea,
a run to Texas, from where ever we originate
and crashing at Gypsy's place.
Enough floorspace? Indoors or out ?

When ???? :)

I totally enjoyed that story. And the older I get, the more often similar situations arise. Maybe we become more aware and more accessible ?
Travelling alone, often adds to the frequency of meeting "strangers".
And NOBODY is completely boring.
