Tips for my Deals Gap trip?

Post by Harry »

Hey, bros:

I'll be heading down to ride "The Dragon" for the first time in a few weeks, and I was wondering if you folks have any insights/advice you might wanna send me along with?

I can't wait to tackle those twisties! It's what the R1150R is made for after all. This will be the polar opposite from my run on the Salt Flats.

I guess the only concern I have is about those extremely aggressive riders coming around the bends in the opposite direction...

If you look at the videos on Youtube, you'll see more than a few passing on a curve AND a double yellow at the same time! *DOH*

Ride the Dragon during the week, if possible. Otherwise, give it a pass. There are plenty of other roads around that are lots of fun, but not as well known,(or dangerous)IMO.

What RB said, and be wary of semi trucks. They have to use both lanes to navigate the corners.

The Cherahola Skyway is great, and only a few miles from Deal's Gap.

+1 on riding it during the week. On a weekend, it is Disney World for bikes.

There are also some other rides nearly as good and a lot less used.

Good stuff, bros. Me and a buddy will be there with some locals, so I'm sure that they'll be able to show us some good alternative routes.

Oh I've learned the lessons of "target fixation" well.... (by running over my share of previously squished squirrels, birds and soda cans).:?

Thanks!

Went there on a Saturday, expecting to see a parade of Harleys and Motor homes. Got to north end at lunch time and the road was clear, had a good run with nothing I couldn't pass in the way, Was passed by two bikes and a silver GT-40 chaseing one of the bikes. Riding the Dragon was great but having a front row seat to watch that Ford move was an extra treat. Overheard (ease dropping) driver telling someone he had 600 HP and was running 14" racing tires (tyres). And yes the RXXXXR series Beemers were made for the Dragon.

And of course, everyone is fully aware, that "the Dragon" is heavily policed
these days. It was not always so.
Maybe an easy exploratory run....both ways first?

One road that I think is very entertaining is(60) from Dahlonega to Suches.... then east on 180. This is in northern Georgia,

Just thinking out loud.
