Hi, Bubbleman: You might! I have found that the RT's fairing makes it easy for the speed to creep up without noticing it. Then again, some say that the CHP may give BMWs more of a break, especially if the riders are wearing protective gear, since they look more like transportation bikes than squidly...

Okay, I will hang around then if I don't have to defect! The replacement parts were needed because I had Jesse cases put on the RR and to do that you have to relocate the rear pegs and various other bits. The service guys gave me those parts to save but, sadly, they were lost in the gigantic mess th...

A defector

Hi, folks: I am afraid I am defecting from our group. I loved my 2004 1150R and will miss it but I have traded it in for a 1200RT. My much-ridden 1150R needed some expensive replacements to continue serving as my daily commuter, tourer and main motor vehicle, and that was enough impetus for making t...

I lowsided an 1150R as well at about 50 mph while touring. The bike did not have the cylinder head guards, and the friction ground a hole through the cylinder so that it filled up with lots of gravel and dirt, but as soon as the cylinder was replaced I was back on the bike to finish the trip. They a...

Hi, Ed - Yes, I think that's exactly what happened... Hwy. 1 north of SF is beautiful but covered with crummy pavement and potholes everywhere...probably pushed up on the bottom of the pannier one too many times, then when riding over the windy Golden Gate Bridge, it was the last straw, and off went...

Thanks, guys! Your experiences and opinions are very helpful.

Yeah, I am an incorrigible lane splitter too, so I probably better get the city lids. I do like the idea of the quick release hinges to install the regular lids for trips.

Sometimes on long rides I do the opposite and put my feet on the passenger pegs, leaning my torso forward onto the tank. It's actually kind of a relaxing position and it straightens out the knees somewhat. Also gets your head out of the wind for a while. Probably I look like a freakazoid...oh, well....

29" inseam, low BMW seat, and very happy with the 1150R. Sometimes when stopping on an uneven surface, I have to slide over on the seat to get the ball of my left foot down solidly, but have managed to keep the shiny side up thus far. :-) Best of luck with your new bike adventures!

System Cases or City Lids?

Does anyone have experience with the regular BMW System Cases vs. the City Lids for lane splitting? I have to get one or the other. I like the fact that the System Cases hold more stuff, but I don't want them to be too fat for filtering. Any thoughts? Thanks and happy riding!

Jesse case fell off on Golden Gate Bridge

Was touring around northern California and Oregon for a few weeks this month, and when we were coming off the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco, one of the Jesse cases on my 1150R spontaneously fell off! I didn't see it but other drivers said that a Mercedes hit it and dragged it along for a few...

I have Jesse cases on my 1150R and I think they are great. Some may not like the way they look, but they hold a enormous amount of gear and they are narrower than the System Cases (but wider than the City Lids) would be. The only disadvantage is that you can't mount a topcase without fabricating som...

Hi, guys: Thanks for your posts. Glad to hear about the other airports you guys have parked at. Regarding gear, I have Jesse cases and they can hold the Aerostich suit, boots, gloves with no problem. I have a Wunderlich seat bag that just fits a full-face helmet. I put a little padlock on the zipper...

Most of us probably don't equally enjoy all forms of risk-taking. For instance, I tried white-water rafting once and it wasn't for me. I can see why other people like it but to me it was just unpleasant. But motorcycles are a different story, or at least on this board. I love riding and I could ride...

Airport parking - how cool is that?

Do any of you park your bike at your local airport? It's not for everyone, I'm sure, but I am quickly becoming a convert at LAX. This past weekend I parked my 1150R at LAX. I'm sure there's a risk in leaving the bike minimally attended overnight in a public place like that, although Beemers are not ...

Filling suggestions

This post won't make gasoline/petrol any cheaper :-( but I hope it's useful nonetheless. A while back I posted a question about how best to pump gasoline with those hoses that have the heavy plastic covers over the nozzles. Got some good suggestions here, like the "peace sign" method of ma...

Sorry to hear about the accident. It's interesting that rear-ending of motorcycles is reportedly one of the less common types of accidents. Maybe that's because cage drivers have to be exceptionally brain-dead in order to plow into a motorcycle that's right smack in front of them. But reading this t...

I am in southern California as well so we are neighbors! Sadly, this ticket followed my last traffic school by only 15 months, so I got stuck with the points. I had tried to talk my way out of the ticket (nailed by a surprise speed trap while riding down from Ventura, through the gorgeous twisties o...

Happy first birthday to my bike

April will mark the first anniversary of my 1150R. I have put > 16K miles on it during its first year and I must say I have enjoyed almost every mile (except for some ridden in inclement weather, when it would be hard to enjoy being on the road in a car either). In fact, the hours on the bike have p...
