I was pulled over for speeding on Wisconsin Ave. coming out of DC on Tuesday. Doing about 45 in a 35.

The officer walks up to my car, I've got both hands in plain sight, and he asks me "howzit going?" I respond: Not too good; I'm busted.

A bit taken aback, he said "pardon?" I reply: I was definitely speeding, so you got me. I'm busted. That's all I said.

I hand him my license and registration and he notices that it happened to be my birthday. He then informed me that July 24th was his birthday too. I was thinking: YES!!

Sure enough, he said that as long as my license was clean, he'd give me a birthday gift. And he did. It ended with a handshake and an exchange of happy birthday wishes.

I've gotten off of two speeding tickets now by just being straight up with the police.... of course the birthday coincidence didn't hurt:-)

I don't know. Pulling someone over for doing 10 above seems lame to me.

10 mph over the speed limit and you get a ticket? I am soooo misinformed. But I'm ready to try to rehabilitate now. Rehabilitation is a slow process, however.

Nice clear picture at that speed! I've pretty much given up on sustained triple digit speeds. The last time I was in traffic court, they were coming down HARD on anyone going over 85mph. I think anything over 100 nowadays would get you: LOSE your license, possible jail time and at least a $1000 fine.

Recently in our area we had a sportbike zooming along our beltway at high speed with a cop or two in chase. The chase ended when the cop lost control and ran into an innocent driver and caused a rather large scale accident. I think at least two people died and the highway was closed for a day. They never caught the guy, and yes, the officer was in the wrong for pursuing the bike at that high of a speed, but they are really cracking down on speeding in the DC area. Plus, those that are lucky enough to live in Virginia, get newly created additional civil remediation fines on top of the court imposed fines. Not worth speeding.

It's really not that hard. First find an old road that is no longer in use and where the speed limit is not marked and it is free of other cars, children, and road hazards. THEN....Just hold the point and shoot in your left hand and rest it on the handlebars and when you get to speed snap a photo. It took 3-4 tries before I got one that wasn't showing the road instead of the speedo - since I couldn't really watch the viewfinder and make adjustments while I rode at that speed and above.

Right. And I will try to never do this again, especially in Virginia.

Oh, I don't know. I did 105 indicated four times on I-81 last Thursday early evening on my way down to Blacksburg. Foolish? Yes. Fun? Hell yes!

I know I-81 well and know where cops are likely to hide out, but I was being extra vigilent with my speeding.

The fines that have been heaped on top of the regular ticket citations is ludicrous. I don't get it as Virginia's state government has plenty of money and heaven knows Richmond isn't spending much of it to help alleviate Northern Virginia traffic!
