Worthwhile to fix?

Post by adg44 »

Maybe I'll just wait until it comes time to sell the bike and then fix it.

The original owner was parked on some gravel, and once he got on the bike he lost his footing and tipped the bike over onto its right side.

It has the cylinder guards, so there was no damage to the valve cover. However, the plastic guard got kind of scrached up, the handlebar end weight, the mirror, rear footpeg, and rear turn signal all got scratched.

It's more like scuffs on the plastic, but they are still there. I don't notice it much, and I may very well make a similar mistake in the near future (as this is my first bike).

However, it looks like it's about $20 for new mirrors (pair), $60 for turn signals (pair), $65 for a new footpeg, $55 for a new cylinder guard, and $20 for new end weights. So I'm looking at roughly $220ish to replace all the scratched components.

While I'm doing the handlebar end weights, I think I may do some barbacks. At 6'3", I find myself leaning over quite a bit (or more than I'd like) to hold the handlebars.

Thoughts?

I have a simalar question. Took a slide in the gravel a couple of weeks back. Scratched up the cylinder head (no guards), bar end and the end ball on the clutch lever. Don't really mind the scratch's, just shows the bike gets ridden! My concern is that the bar end and clutch lever are starting to show rust where the paint was scratched off. So far the cylinder heads look fine. Is there a specific kind of paint anyone would recommend to cover up the scratchs and stop the rust?

Sand the plastic guards down with progressively finer sandpaper and then rub armorall on them over a couple of days. May fix them right up. If they are really torn up, fix them with a little JB Weld and then sand them down and then spray paint them. As long as the brackets aren't broken, they should be able to be fixed.

$20 for a pair of mirrors??? That does not sound right.

For the bar end weights, buy a can of Wurth Satin Black spray paint. It is a perfect match for the factory paint. DAMHIK!

You're right, none of the price I quoted were per pair, but rather for each one. I was reading the Pars Fische incorrectly.

Also, I don't know where I got $20 from; the mirror is $52/ea.

Now I also see that they don't have the rear footpeg for the Rockster....

Yeah, I had looked through there and really couldn't find any of the parts I need.

If you are handy, you can actually salvage the bar-ends with liquid metal putty, sand it down and spray.

Mirrors same same (with suitable putty and unless really bad damage) and respray too. Only items to replace would be guards and peg.

Cheers

Tip overs are going to happen. I used a fat black sharpie and colored up my end weights after hitting it with 600 grit. Remember only you will "see" the scratches. Everyone else will still just say... "Wow, nice bike", fixed or not
