Tire wear
I have 04 r1150 with metzler tires..any thoughts on the suggest miles I will get out of the set? Since I have had the bike I have put approx 8,000 miles on it in the last 8 months. With the winter coming my useage will slow considerably..I went to Metzler web site and in the process of measuring the tread wear. Anybody out there have info how long these tires last?
Don't know which Metzelers you have, but I've had 2 on my bike. MEZ4's and Marathon 880s. The MEZ 4s were great, 24k kms. I think they are discontinued.
The 880s are still avail. not quite as sticky, but you should get great mileage out of them - 20-25k kms. Of course, this depends on your riding style, pressures and road conditions of your locale.

I put nearly 16,000 miles on my Metzler ME-Z4's, I have 6,000 on a set of Pirelli Diablo Stratas. The mileage you get depends on a lot of factors, but I have suspected for a long time that riding style and temperature are the main factors. Hot tires wear more when you're corner strafing. However, DJ corner strafes, and rides long distances in hot weather but still gets great mileage out of his tires. My Z4's had tread across the center of the tire so I could tell when it was near wearout. My Diablos don't and neither do your Z6's. I think DJ ran his Z6's down to the steel belts one time on a road trip. I believe he had steel showing all the way around when he got home. The pictures are probably still over in great rides somewhere.
I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.
I just replaced my Metzler Z6s... the rear last month with 17,000 miles on it
And the front last week . . . with +11,000 on that.
Probably shoulda replaced the rear about 4K earlier at the least
but heck, no threads were showing.
The front still looked good, but was starting to cup. I generally run 40-42 psi in the rear, and 38-40 psi in the front. I ride a Rockster and do mostly highway miles. Maybe 20% curvy roads.

My M6's lasted until 8K miiles. Didn't take them down to bare tread, but they were cupping fairly significantly so, changed them and put on a pair of Conti Road Attacks.
I ride mostly back roads, twisties and maybe 10 - 20 % on the slab.

I have been running Michelin pilot roads and have had three flats (I work around steel processing plants) The pilot roads are polyester cord and nylon belts. Are the Metzlers really steel belted? I could use the extra protection. What does it say on the sidewall of a Z6? The Metzler website doesn't describe the construction.davidh8462 wrote:They are Metzler 6 steel belted radials (front and back). I have been riding mostly over Northern California were the road conditions are good. Thanks for the info on your Metzlers.

Though the ME Z6 is steel-belted (2 belts, I think), they can still be punctured relatively easily. I picked up a sheet metal screw in my rear tire at just over 1,000 miles. The srew (maybe a #8 x 1/2") pushed through the belts far enough to cause a slow leak. I dismounted the tire, repaired the puncture with a radial tire patch and put another 12 or 13,000 miles on that tire.
The Z6 has about 6mm of tread when new - my tires with about 14k miles on them show about 2.5mm rear and about 3.5mm on the front. The rear needs replacement in the near future, not so much because it's close to the min safe tread depth (2mm) but more due to it starting to cup and squaring off. The front has a few thousand more good miles.
My riding is about 15% low speed communting, 40% highway and the rest backroads. All one-up miles and never really heavily loaded though.

19.000 km (about 11.800 miles) and still counting on Z6 Roadtec.
But dont forget that the tyre wear depends from the circumstances you are riding your bike.
An example: the greek roads are slippery and i dont ride like a madman (not any more).
So the wear is not the same with someone who rides like Toni Elias on german roads.
Once again sorry for my English
