Oh God, what did I do?

Well, tonight was the compilation of quite a few errors, starting with attempting my first oil change on my R1150R when I haven't slept in a couple of days. Since the maintenance manual, for some odd reason, doesn't actually tell you how to change the oil, I had to go with what I could find on the internet. Sadly, I stumbled across this post a little too late.

Completely misunderstanding the instructions that I found at this site (http://home.mindspring.com/~jabrooks/), I unscrewed the wrong plug. If I were better rested, the fact that the oil barely trickled out would have been a big clue that I was doing it wrong.

When I removed that plug, there was a long spring behind it that was pressing some kind of plunger down in there. I'd love to know if anyone can tell me what I just did. I'm hoping that it's a non issue, and that I'll just have to properly drain the oil this time (now that I've found correct drain plug).

I looked thru my shop manual and I'm making an educated guess---it appears to have something to do with the oil pump. My first guess would be to say that if all was put back in the way it came out then you're probably ok. BUT that is purely a guess on my part. You need to get an opinion from Boxermania or CycleRob.

It's the oil pressure regulator assembly's spring & piston. It opens up to bleed oil back into the sump when the oil pressure goes above a predetermined pressure, like when you rev the engine. It also is open a lot more when the engine is cold and the oil doesn't flow that easy.

If you just put it all back in (with the gasket washer) and tightened it up, there's nothing to worry about.

Mistakes are made......In case the parts came out, I have enclosed an overview so you can see how they go back in, items 7,8,9 and 10.

Unfortunately it will not open as shown, you will have to copy and paste on your server. Once it opens select slide #3 on the left column.
