No maintenance on a 2004
I'm looking to purchase a 2004 R1150R. It sounds like it is in excellent, "show room", condition and only has @2500 miles on it. When I asked the seller about maintenance he said it hadn't needed any because of the low miles. Is this true? I would think you would change fluids like the oil every season. Thanks....

The seller is mistaken.
Maintenance schedule calls for service every 6,000 miles HOWEVER at 600 miles, there's a very important one where they torque the heads. If that was missed, it could be a problem.
If you are considering buying this bike, I would not do so without taking it first to a BMW dealer for a thorough check up.

Both you and Taosports are correct. One of the fallacies of low mileage bikes is that there is the time element to be taken into consideration. In your case, I would have the oil, filter, brake and clutch fluids changed. I would check the tranny and diferential fluids for proper level, the air filter and the battery condition.
That would bring a 4 year old, low mileage bike in check with the normal servicing. Good luck to you and post some pics if you get it.

No facts here, just supposition and opinion.
Super low mileage bikes have always scared me a bit. I would rather have a bike that has been ridden some each year, preferably by a non-"RickyRacer" type like myself. If I were looking for an R bike of 2004 vintage, I would rather have one that is fully "broken in", say around 20,000 miles, and that has had proper maintenance performed on it. That to me could be the perfect used bike. I most certainly would not pay a premium price for the one you are looking at. A 4 year old bike with 2500 miles could have had that put on in one short summer season, and then sat for 3.5 years. Not so good in my opinion.

I agree with toolinalong. Especially if the 600 mile service was not done. That is performed to flush through any small metal shavings that may have worn off as the everything was just being run in.

Check the FS section. Our own Slideruyle has an '04 with 8600 miles that looks like a better deal.

It turns out that he is the second owner. He bought the bike on consignment a year ago from a BMW dealer and he has put less than 600 miles on it which is why it isn't due for maintenance. The bike of course looks flawless. Starts up right away, etc. He's asking $7k for it which seems resonable. Thanks for all the input/help/opinions.
