after 40 min riding in the rain..the bike stop running......
i was on my way to Georgia under some heavy rain all was fine, i stopped at the toll got the
ticket, took off and minutes later the bike stop running, as if had run out of fuel, i had just
fill the tank up before leaving.when i try to start the bike up again the RPM indicator needle
started to do some weird stuff, going up and down and vibrating. i waited a few seconds
try again and the needle stop doing the weird stuff and the bike sounded like it wanted to start but it did not.... right now the bike is sitting in a friends house and will not start.....i was riding
under some pretty heavy rain and i wonder if that had anything to do with it, or if i had put
contaminated fuel at the service station ...could i get some help with this..thank you

There's a lot of things it could be and riding in a heavy rain could create many of them. Bad fuel would be my last guess at this point. I'm guessing water has gotten into some critical area of the bike's electrics---possibly sidestand switch or kill switch?
More troubleshooting is in order-----will the bike fire at all or simply just spinning the motor with the starter? Do you smell fuel in the exhaust when cranking? Are the plugs firing? You said it acted like it wanted to start----that would tell me the ignition is working somewhat. I would let it dry out thoroughly, maybe use some compressed air to help the drying process----in moderation!

I had a similar issue several years ago. My bike was towed to the dealer in Knoxville and hooked to their computer. It claimed the wiring harness was bad. Then it claimed it was ok. Put it back together and it started just fine. We don't know for sure, but we think water got down in the TPS sensor connector. It's attached to the left side throttle body. Air it out for a bit and maybe it will do fine. I never had the problem again and I've ridden in some pretty bad rain.

Sounds like the Hall effect sensor wiring shorted out after it got wet. The "wacky tach" is a symptom of this problem. It is caused by water getting into the wiring that leads to the Hall effect sensors that control the ignition timing. They are located behind the lower fan belt pulley under the black plastic cover at the front of the engine. There is a wiring harness that leads up from there under the alternator and into the Motronic computer's wiring harness that apparently gets too hot where it is attached to the engine block and the insulation around the individual wires breaks down, then water gets in there and shorts them out. A search of the archives of this forum and others will provide more details. The easiest, but not cheapest fix is to replace the Hall Effect Sensor assembly.
That is my best guess. Hope it helps you narrow down the problem.

My best guess is the wiring to the hall effect sensor, as described by Sunbeemer.

I don’t know if it is water problem. I ride my bike (1150 R) very often in extremely heavy rain but nothing wrong is happened. My guess (if it is really the rain) that there is some thing wrong with the motor which you should find out…
Best of luck

I had the same experience years ago when the coil on my R80 developed a crack and shorted out when rain splashed up on it. When I discovered the problem, I epoxied the crack and the coil worked fine for another couple of years.

Recently had my '02 r1150r stall in the middle of a highway after 4 hours in the rain.
Turned out it was the hall effect. Mechanic said these can go after 20,000 - 40,000 miles, especially if there's a lot of city driving involved.

Just returned from a 200 mile run from Suches,Ga to Charlotte,N.C. I was stuck in a front and the rain followed me the whole way home. I was drenched, water proof boots were full of water and all my rain gear was sloppy wet. Drove right through at a speed of 70, 6 hours total and the bike ran like a top. Have no complaint about my 2004 R.

Re: after 40 min riding in the rain..the bike stop running......
The bouncing tach needle is the key symptom. That narrows it down to the Hall Sensor OR it's wiring leading to the plugs under the fueltank. The low voltage length wiring from the Hall Sensor is vulnerable to chafing wear all along it's perilous path to the top. A frayed alternator belt can sever it or remove it's insulation. Remove the black plastic belt cover and confirm the wire's insulation integrity is undamaged. Look closely at all the lead wire's contact points with metal or Aluminum.
Before you decide to replace the Hall Sensor, loosen the belt and remove the 16mm bolt holding on the big pulley to clean the sensors 2 pickups with contact cleaner and an old toothbrush. If salty or rusty vehicle contaminated rain puddles are thrown at the vented front cover by the front wheel, it can cause the problem you had.
