Well I may be joining your ranks sooner than expected....
I have just stumbled across someone that purchased a 2008 R1200R in my area this past September and he has decided that he has too many toys already and needs to sell it. It is barely broken in with less than 400 km on it. So if the planets align and it turns out that it is not too good to be true I may have an R1200R in my garage by Christmas...
Too bad I won't get to ride it until the Spring. That part will kill me....
Just needed to share the news...I will keep you all posted.

Stories like these are not unheard of.....I sold my F800S with 430km & every accessory on the BMW brochure. Just so happened that the right person came along (obviously his planets were well aligned that day
) and i was in the mood to sell.
Enjoy the R!

Use the fact that its pretty close to needing the first service (its really at 1,000KM, or one really good day of riding) which costs around $300US IIRC as an excuse to knock a few $$ of the price. First service is retorquing the head bolts, valve adjust, oil change, and final drive oil change, IIRC. Good luck.

I like good stories. Here's mine..Hi everyone I'm from South Australia. I am on the cusp of signing up for the R1200R.Just trying to rationalize such a big purchase. I am hoping to have the bike totally farckled up (optioned) with the works,ABS,ESA ,ASC? full luggage systemetc etc, even 12v powersocket.
I was wondering if people have really needed the ASC,traction control.
I find forum info the best and usually from the heart rather than the salesman. I'm not expecting to hoon my bike around. I can get one without ASC NOW or wait 3/12 for delivery from O/S with ASC. We are a small market in OZ!!
The other Q is whether people have found the need for extra seating gear for pillion seat.
This forum, if I go ahead will prob be my next home . BTW for interest cost for basic 2008 bike here is AUD$18750 ie US$12470. Fair?? I crave attention so any given will be appreciated.

Your bad choice,no one else to blame.
Re: Well I may be joining your ranks sooner than expected....
I don't have the ASC and would not pay extra for it or wait for it. The bike is plenty fast in the twisties ( no traction problems ) and the lack of ASC allows me to be joyfully immature on gravel roads.

Re: Well I may be joining your ranks sooner than expected....
If I had the option for ASC when I bought my bike - I would have gotten it. I have a number of friends who have lowsided due to loss of rear traction. I'd rather not join them in this not fun action. I've also heard from people who have ASC that they don't find it intrusive or even very noticeable so no big downside to it (and no additional weight since it's all done in software.)
So - different strokes for different folks.

In the year I've had my R12R there have been 3 instances when the bike has gotten squirrelly in the corners. Almost went down in one of them. But every time the bike has gotten traction and pulled through. I guess it depends on how much extra protection you want. I still wouldn't wait for the ASC though. Mike

Re: Well I may be joining your ranks sooner than expected....
I'm coming off older bikes with rear tires in the 120mm range and am having a hard time with that 180mm rear tire on the R. When you hit even a small amount of gravel the tire seems to take a long time to hook up again. I don't even want to get into the rubberized tape (in the rain) that my home state uses to mark the roads. So far it has always gained traction, but I had a hard time till I figured out what was going on. Personally I think BMW gave in to style over function on the size of the rear tire. It would be interesting riding an ASC bike on wet grass and over roads with those marble sized gravel in the corners.
